Thanks for the Carnival, Doc!

RE: 17 - ECCO LOONS ARE DROWNING IN DESPARE IN LAKE GREENLAND (or they will be if this gets out)

As you my not wish to know, if Greenland's 6300000 cubic miles of glacier melts, they sea levels would raise about 20 to 25 feet. That's true enough, but the Greenies say it is so immanent, it could happen in our sleep tonight! So, beware. Wooooooo!

Anyway, so being the geek wannabe that I am, I dug out conversion factors, heat of fusion of ice, BTU per ton of coal, Tons of coal consumed worldwide per year, and came up with, ta daaa . . .

If you took Greenland's glacier, all 6.3 million cubic miles of it, and put it in a pot on a coal fired stove, then shoveled coal in at the rate the entire world is consuming it (sorry world, this is more important) which is roughly 5.3 Billion Tons per Year, it would take all of . . . are you ready? . . . are you sure? . . . o.k., you asked for it.

ta daa . . .

suspense killing you yet, or did you cheat and skip to the end?

ta daa . . .

It would take 51,645 years to melt the whole D@#*&# thing!

Better hit the panic button, that's right around the corner.

OH, YES, AND . . .

. . . If pouring heat directly into the blasted thing at 100% efficiency can't get it to melt any faster than to contribute ( 25 ft / 51,645 yrs ), or 1.23e-02 mm/year, then out of which orifice did they pull this thing melting in decades?

Just curious.

Here's an oddity. For sale: A watch and cuff-link set that once belonged to the Sultan of Oman - with the Sultan's coat-of-arms emblazoned on the watch face to prove it.

No, here's the corrected link.
