I understand where you are coming from, but I know that you will be back sometime and somewhere just when we need you. You have educated so many of us, made us laugh, and honed our ability to see behind the spin. Thank you so much.
Your Abraham Lincoln rose reminds me a bit of a rose I have. When we moved here our back yard was a mass of huge fir trees plants about 30 inches apart on a hill of building garbage covered with a few inches of clay. One day I was upstairs inspecting the remodeling work and I glanced out the guest room window. There at my eye level was a single rose the color of Abe atop an almost leafless stem. Now, with trees cut and a bit of care, I have new branches and about a dozen blooms. I have named my rose Survivor. We too will survive, and we will come back better than ever.
No matter how long or short the hiatus, your voice will be missed.
When it is all said and done, the reality is that this blog will be regarded as one that made the blogosphere a better place.
The Dr Sanity blog has been and will remain a portal to clear thought, ideas and cogent analysis of the world we live in.
Hurry up, take care of business and get back to your keyboard.

1973-75 was a similar recession and gloom in the country i'm told. Luckily i was 13 years old and so busy enjoying life that i seem to have missed it all.I'm going to work on regaining the wisdom i had at 13.

Whatever sustenance you have gotten by way of e or comment pales in regard to what you have given to so many of us out here in electronland. You have been a stalwart voice of reason and thoughtful insight. Always trying to establish clarity out of a morass of multipli-overlapping issues which seem to intensify without rhyme, reason or any practical purpose at all.

It is impossible for me to express just how much I will miss your blog. It was, indeed, an island of sanity in this crazy world. But, I understand. I have retreated to knitting and my dogs. But even there, I run into governmental craziness. I have now had 5 dogs attacked by unleashed dogs while my dogs were being walked on leash. The most recent is still being treated for an 8" wound. The "authorities" are a joke. So, I will be taking up this issue on a serious basis. Welcome to California, Dr. Sanity!

Come on, Doc. You don't have to do it every day. People need your insights, even if only once a week or so. There aren't many who do what you do, or as well, and it will be a shame if you depart permanently.

You and the Sanity Squad used to talk so much about narcissists. Funny, I recently had a crash course in narcissism; in fact, a good God smacking by one and that forced me to learn quite a deal about these nefarious idiots who crave a certain Machiavellian control and as a result, seeth in their own disorder. Sad, scary lot, these people; these men. They're the reason, I'm battling misandry.
If you can, spend a little time trying to decipher the ways and means of the cyberpath. They're so much more than mere sociopaths with access to a computer.

I echo the thoughts of some others here in hoping to see you commenting in other blogs you read. That's not hard to do and is certainly not as onerous and time-consuming as running your own blog.
Maybe you could provide a list of your favorite blogs so we can keep an eye on them? If nothing else, we might find some good blogs we didn't know about.
I haven't linked it here before but my "home base" blog is Grouchy Conservative Pundits, formerly Gulf Coast Pundit. It has a forum structure so that members can not only comment, but can start their own threads on whatever topic interests them. Thus, I can play at being a blogger without actually going to the trouble of running my own blog.
Doc, like the rest of the crowd we'll miss your ability to clearly see around the earth's curvature. You encouraged my husband and I to launch our little blog Dewey From Detroit

I recognize that a lot of what you write comes easily, in that it is based on years of schooling and professional practice. I also suspect that you have to go through a special kind of filtering/editing process to make it understandable to us non-professionals. Compounded with the emotional pulling in multiple directions, I understand the inner weariness. Plus you still have a family and practice to maintain.
I am so sorry, also, for all of the hate and venom that have been directed at you. There is the spiritual side to this battle you have been waging: when people have anointed themselves to be their own "god", and their [disfunctional]
thinking is their right to play that role, woe be to anyone who challenges them. ( e.g. PrezBO ) I believe that
"mind-set" is sourced in the pit of hell (no good deed goes unpunished) and is designed to wear out good folk.

This weekend we were at the beach and I watched Lonesome Dove for the first time in 20 years. Me in tears much of the time. As my daughter says, "It is a story of the old West. How could it be anything but a tragedy?" Anyway there is a scene when Gus dies. His life-time buddy, Captain McCall, is there. Just before he passes away, Gus opens his eyes to look at Mccall and says: "It has been a hell of a run, hasn't it."

The enemies of America have besieged all good men and women over these last few decades. Their strategic goals will be taking a hit once the counter-attack begins. And that attack will be far too extreme and ruthless than the impact of a door.
Without their logistics to fuel their war machine, they will die on the vine, bereft of shelter, water, and food. And unlike Terry Schiavo, they will deserve every moment of it come the end.

I came to the same conclusion a few months back - time to enjoy life and not let the 'insanities' get you down. I put my blog to bed, bought a horse, and put myself out to pasture. Great decision for me and I wish the same contentment for you.
Thanks for all the smiles in the face of all the crazy. You have been a light in dark places, but for now you've earned a good rest. The best thing about gardening is being outdoors! Enjoy!
Perhaps when it is time for our voices again, we'll have the energy reserves we need to go back to it.

Like you, I also am a physician and have done my best for years working in the ER.
At this point in my 61 years, I can tell you that I am tired and heartbroken.
Now my biggest decision is to either leave gracefully, or tell the bastards to stick it where the sun don't shine. After my last shift I'm opting for the second choice.I do understand your decision to take time off. Best wishes always.

I have only visited a short while, so I regret your leave. However DO KEEP THE WEBSITE UP! There is so much information here that I have yet to digest and I think it would be tragic to lose it.
In the meantime, consider an occasional essay - there are some of us who will always treasure your thoughts.
Finally, other than the mindless liberalism, I think you will find California to your liking - I espec. like Northern California and have lived here most of my life.
If you are thinking of locating in the Santa Cruz area I think that will be espec. nice. UC Santa Cruz has a beautiful campus nestled in the trees.

So sorry to see you go. I've arrived late here as I was off the net for a while due to illness in the family. I first ran into you pre Katrina in 2004 when I was in New Orleans. I was the guy who shared you're love for the "Rick Brandt Science Adventure" Books, remember? Due to Katrina I was off blogging for several years, so I understand how the press of personal life, let alone "blog burn-out" can lead to such a decision. Funnily enough I am now out in Calif. part-time now that you are heading here. (still maintain residence in N.O., I'm BI--coastal, that is)
Read you often, didn't comment enough, really. Sad to see you go. Hope you recharge your batteries sooner rather than later. You were a bastion of "Sanity" in an increasingly insane world.

Very Sad, Pat and I hope you'll have a change of heart sometime soon, as your posts were the sanest stuff in my daily readings. I refer to your backpost and link them often in my own much-less-cogent blogs.
I do know how you must feel, as most of the responses to my moderately conservative blog are unprintable salacious and often ungrammatical garbage.
I spent three of the best years of my life in Ann Arbor at U of Mich and I hope you prosper and have a change of heart.
p.s. The roses are fantastic. Is the John Paul rose the first pope or the second of that name? I wish you much luck in relocating and hope you do an occasional blog to share your thoughts and let us catch up with your progress.
