Good morning, Pat.
How unfortunate that circumstances have pushed you to this decision. You provided a valuable and refreshing perspective on the disappointing goofyness that America has become. I looked forward to reading your thoughts every day.
Nevertheless, I wish you and yours happiness and good health. I hope that your move will be a safe one, and that you will enjoy California. I am from Michigan. My wife is from Menlo Park California. I loved the California geography, weather, and sights. Not the people. Keep your chin up, kiddo!
By the way, would you consider collecting email addresses from your patrons, so that if you decide to enter the blogsphere again, you could notify us? This would mean a lot to your fans.
One last thought along the continuing theme of your blog, and the few others that I visit everyday:
"I have learned from history that people learn nothing from history."
Again, best wishes to you, Pat.
Your Jackson neighbor.

Doc,
I understand where you are coming from, but I know that you will be back sometime and somewhere just when we need you. You have educated so many of us, made us laugh, and honed our ability to see behind the spin. Thank you so much.
Your Abraham Lincoln rose reminds me a bit of a rose I have. When we moved here our back yard was a mass of huge fir trees plants about 30 inches apart on a hill of building garbage covered with a few inches of clay. One day I was upstairs inspecting the remodeling work and I glanced out the guest room window. There at my eye level was a single rose the color of Abe atop an almost leafless stem. Now, with trees cut and a bit of care, I have new branches and about a dozen blooms. I have named my rose Survivor. We too will survive, and we will come back better than ever. expat | Email | Homepage | 07.06.09 - 7:53 am | #

No matter how long or short the hiatus, your voice will be missed.
When it is all said and done, the reality is that this blog will be regarded as one that made the blogosphere a better place.
The Dr Sanity blog has been and will remain a portal to clear thought, ideas and cogent analysis of the world we live in.
Hurry up, take care of business and get back to your keyboard.

I've thougt about that. How we give the nutcases power by letting them impede our own lives.
1973-75 was a similar recession and gloom in the country i'm told. Luckily i was 13 years old and so busy enjoying life that i seem to have missed it all.I'm going to work on regaining the wisdom i had at 13.
I appreciate your efforts and wish you the best of times. SteveH | Email | Homepage | 07.06.09 - 8:08 am | #

Thank you so very much for the voice of reason you've provided to so many for so long. You've certainly helped my mental health as our Country and Culture slide into the abyss. By all means return to your center and regain your optimism.

While I expect to refer to your archives frequently, and of course I wish you all the best, this is quite disappointing news. Thank you for yeoman (or yeoperson) work in dispelling some of the insanity that seems to be more and more prevelant in public life.

Sad news Dr Sanity, but of all people I know, even those in physical proximity, I have great faith in your ability to make good decisions.
Whatever sustenance you have gotten by way of e or comment pales in regard to what you have given to so many of us out here in electronland. You have been a stalwart voice of reason and thoughtful insight. Always trying to establish clarity out of a morass of multipli-overlapping issues which seem to intensify without rhyme, reason or any practical purpose at all.
All the best to you and yours and I know what and where ever the focus of your newest efforts, they shall be lucky to be involved in any way with you. Thank you. Siha Sapa | Email | Homepage | 07.06.09 - 10:09 am | #

Please do not leave your voice silent. We all need a fresh dose of sanity, esp in today's environment.

It is impossible for me to express just how much I will miss your blog. It was, indeed, an island of sanity in this crazy world. But, I understand. I have retreated to knitting and my dogs. But even there, I run into governmental craziness. I have now had 5 dogs attacked by unleashed dogs while my dogs were being walked on leash. The most recent is still being treated for an 8" wound. The "authorities" are a joke. So, I will be taking up this issue on a serious basis. Welcome to California, Dr. Sanity! Judith L | Email | Homepage | 07.06.09 - 10:56 am | #

Blogging does indeed take a commitment of time. I have a great deal of time. Perhaps I don't appreciate the garden blooming outside my window. But this is one of the places I go to read up on the daily craziness. Keep the light on, I'll hope to mine the archives. I'll miss you. Come on, Doc. You don't have to do it every day. People need your insights, even if only once a week or so. There aren't many who do what you do, or as well, and it will be a shame if you depart permanently.

Goodbye Pat. I understand your need to quit. It's a crazy world out there and the blogosphere is rife with some of the biggest examples of the lunacy of which you speak.
You and the Sanity Squad used to talk so much about narcissists. Funny, I recently had a crash course in narcissism; in fact, a good God smacking by one and that forced me to learn quite a deal about these nefarious idiots who crave a certain Machiavellian control and as a result, seeth in their own disorder. Sad, scary lot, these people; these men. They're the reason, I'm battling misandry.
If you can, spend a little time trying to decipher the ways and means of the cyberpath. They're so much more than mere sociopaths with access to a computer.
Let me know what you come up with.

I wish you well, Dr. Sanity. Since I am currently living in SoCal, I want to say welcome to our wonderfully beautiful state.
I confess I've only been an occasionally visitor but your commentaries have often insightful and well written. I was also at one point a blogger and have stopped blogging for similar reasons. The question I asked myself was, "Is the work I put into blogging worth the gratification I receive from the conversations?"
The answer was, no. It wasn't worth it, and it seems you've come to the same tentative conclusion.
I wish you well, Dr. Sanity. It was a good run. Thomas | Email | Homepage | 07.07.09 - 8:21 pm | #

I echo the thoughts of some others here in hoping to see you commenting in other blogs you read. That's not hard to do and is certainly not as onerous and time-consuming as running your own blog.
Maybe you could provide a list of your favorite blogs so we can keep an eye on them? If nothing else, we might find some good blogs we didn't know about.
I haven't linked it here before but my "home base" blog is Grouchy Conservative Pundits, formerly Gulf Coast Pundit. It has a forum structure so that members can not only comment, but can start their own threads on whatever topic interests them. Thus, I can play at being a blogger without actually going to the trouble of running my own blog. rickl | Email | Homepage | 07.07.09 - 9:19 pm | #

Thank you so very much for all of your hard work. Your writings have helped me to understand better the workings(??) of some of the crazy people in this country and around the world. Your writings on shame-based and guilt-based cultures is so enlightening.
I recognize that a lot of what you write comes easily, in that it is based on years of schooling and professional practice. I also suspect that you have to go through a special kind of filtering/editing process to make it understandable to us non-professionals. Compounded with the emotional pulling in multiple directions, I understand the inner weariness. Plus you still have a family and practice to maintain.
I am so sorry, also, for all of the hate and venom that have been directed at you. There is the spiritual side to this battle you have been waging: when people have anointed themselves to be their own "god", and their [disfunctional]
thinking is their right to play that role, woe be to anyone who challenges them. ( e.g. PrezBO ) I believe that
"mind-set" is sourced in the pit of hell (no good deed goes unpunished) and is designed to wear out good folk.
I pray that God will refresh you with new surroundings, and faithful friends, new and old to love you and encourage you. And that He will give you wisdom to know when and how to fight. (Ref: song--"Warrior is a Child" by Twila Paris)
God Bless you so very much!!

May I suggest, that say once a week you send your faithful followers at least an update on your thoughts about the passing scene? I for one have gotten a lot, and more than I've retured directly, tho I do quote you a lot and send along your pertinent thoughts very often.
And please, give us a few alternatives to get inside the heads of these insane Liberal, totalitarian, Socialist, or whatever they should be called, twits! We can still recover the best points of being an American, I have every faith.
And finally, dear Pat, California? Isn't that like jumping from the frying pan into the fire? (short of Cuba or Venezuela of course).
We love you, dear Dr. Sanity! Bernie | Email | Homepage | 07.07.09 - 11:27 pm | #

Dr. Sanity,
I ran accross your blog by chance several years ago and have enjoyed reading it ever since. I'm sorry to learn that you're closing it down. There are millions of blogs out there but only a relative handful of good ones, and blogs with your insights into the human psyche are rarer still. I'll certainly miss it along with thousands of other devoted fans.
My hope is that after a little R and R you'll be back online and better than ever. Whatever course you ultimately decide on, I wish you the best. Mark Levin | Email | Homepage | 07.08.09 - 12:54 am | #

Hi, Pat,
We'll sure miss you. But could I ask you to consider one last post? This could be a way forward (and where there's life, there's hope).
Check these folks out. Their platform is astonishing--it's what most of us have been looking for.
http://theamericanconservatives.org/cms/
The American Conservative Party
“The American Conservative Party was founded by a group of people who grew disillusioned with the Republican party, and tired of saying “Someone should do something about it. We need a leader like Reagan or Thatcher.” Collectively, we finally decided that not only was there no Messiah of the Right, but there should not be such an icon.
“Given a hero to lead them, people would flock to his or her banner, and we’d march on to Washington, ready to smite our foes. Manna would rain from the heavens and we’d bask in our freedoms and economic prosperity.
“Just one problem. What happens when that hero dies?
“Well, for an answer to that, look at what happened to “Reaganism.” Look what happened to “Thatcherism.” Barely a generation has gone by, and the U.K. is selling its sovereignty to the bureaucrats in Brussels, and we have “sold our birthright for a mess of porridge.”
“We, the people, don’t need an icon — we need a firm political philosophy grounded in the 17th & 18th century Age of Enlightenment that produced this very country.
“The Republican party has failed to even address the need, let alone fulfill it. Instead, they engage in the politics of opportunism, voting for $700 billion bailouts when they are in power, and against them when they aren’t. Individual congressmen decry government spending one week and brag how much they brought to their district in the next.
“It has to stop. It has to be stopped at all levels. It can’t just be stopped in Washington, the rot is too deep. We must fight at the local, the county, the state, and the federal levels to revive the philosophy of a limited government unable to tax us into peonage, make us dependent upon government for our very subsistence, unable to interfere in our home and work, unable to be the father, mother, and keeper of our very lives and that of our children.
“This is why we collectively declared, “if there should be no one leader, then there must be a thousand. Our numbers will be legion and we shall not falter with the life of a single person. We few are but the beginning.”
“It’s a bit pompous sounding, but it expresses the sentiment nicely: We take back our government, or we sell our future generations into tax slavery to pay off the madness that has gripped our leaders — Democrat and Republican alike.
“Conservatives: Welcome to your new home. Let’s get to work.”
Best wishes, to you, Dr. Sanity. Thanks for your service to us all. Please do consider passing the word along for the ACP, if their platform seems sound to you. It sure does to me. --Beverly Beverly | Email | Homepage | 07.08.09 - 2:00 am | #

I'm so sorry to hear you are going on hiatus... I hope it is just hiatus. Your posts have explained so much irrational behavior that I observed, and could not understand.

This weekend we were at the beach and I watched Lonesome Dove for the first time in 20 years. Me in tears much of the time. As my daughter says, "It is a story of the old West. How could it be anything but a tragedy?" Anyway there is a scene when Gus dies. His life-time buddy, Captain McCall, is there. Just before he passes away, Gus opens his eyes to look at Mccall and says: "It has been a hell of a run, hasn't it."
Saying goodbye to you, Dr Sanity, seems to have that quality also. Your blog has indeed been a hell of a run, and I have am so grateful. THANK YOU.

The enemies of America have besieged all good men and women over these last few decades. Their strategic goals will be taking a hit once the counter-attack begins. And that attack will be far too extreme and ruthless than the impact of a door.
Without their logistics to fuel their war machine, they will die on the vine, bereft of shelter, water, and food. And unlike Terry Schiavo, they will deserve every moment of it come the end. Ymarsakar | Email | Homepage | 07.09.09 - 9:25 am | #

Doctor, I just discovered your site recently, and now you're going away! For the short time that I have been reading your blog I've found it to be one of the most insightful (and inspiring) places on the Web. I sincerely wish you the best in your future, whatever it ends up being. I hope it'll involve blogging, or perhaps posting your excellent writings on other sites of similar mind. I hope also that you are not burning out on blogging because of the hatred and fear you have garnered from others; if this is the case, especially with someone as clear-minded as you, then perhaps we have lost far more than your wisdom after all.
Good wishes to you, Doctor. May your future be bright.

Dr. Sanity,
I came to the same conclusion a few months back - time to enjoy life and not let the 'insanities' get you down. I put my blog to bed, bought a horse, and put myself out to pasture. Great decision for me and I wish the same contentment for you.
Thanks for all the smiles in the face of all the crazy. You have been a light in dark places, but for now you've earned a good rest. The best thing about gardening is being outdoors! Enjoy!
Perhaps when it is time for our voices again, we'll have the energy reserves we need to go back to it.

Dear Dr. Sanity,
Thank you for your work and being a touchstone in these difficult times.
Like you, I also am a physician and have done my best for years working in the ER.
At this point in my 61 years, I can tell you that I am tired and heartbroken.

I have only visited a short while, so I regret your leave. However DO KEEP THE WEBSITE UP! There is so much information here that I have yet to digest and I think it would be tragic to lose it.
In the meantime, consider an occasional essay - there are some of us who will always treasure your thoughts.
Finally, other than the mindless liberalism, I think you will find California to your liking - I espec. like Northern California and have lived here most of my life.

So sorry to see you go. I've arrived late here as I was off the net for a while due to illness in the family. I first ran into you pre Katrina in 2004 when I was in New Orleans. I was the guy who shared you're love for the "Rick Brandt Science Adventure" Books, remember? Due to Katrina I was off blogging for several years, so I understand how the press of personal life, let alone "blog burn-out" can lead to such a decision. Funnily enough I am now out in Calif. part-time now that you are heading here. (still maintain residence in N.O., I'm BI--coastal, that is)

Very Sad, Pat and I hope you'll have a change of heart sometime soon, as your posts were the sanest stuff in my daily readings. I refer to your backpost and link them often in my own much-less-cogent blogs.
