Adolescents don't tend to get sick, they neither have nor hang much with kids who do get sick, they don't give a fig about nutrition, they don't need living space much larger than a postage stamp, and they have plenty of free time. So many of the bad things that happen in socialism take a while to filter down to an adolescent.

Note how much of the Left wishes to live in a state of perpetual adolescence.

If you don't have children or plan on having children, why worry about whether the available housing for your salary is big enough to raise kids in? If you are healthy and self-absorbed, why worry about a waiting list to see the doctor? If you live on scant food and many intoxicants, why worry what's on the grocery store shelves?

I agree that something like repetition compulsion, and the desire to have a predictable, if victimizing, result is part of what is happening here. There remains the hope that somehow, somewhere, communism will work, and if it doesn't, at least we know the result: poor people in some other place will suffer the consequences.

But there is an additional reason, summed up in the phrase "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Chavez hates Bush and criticises him. He is thus a valuable ally for the left, no matter how unsavory he might be. Though this seems odd politics, it actually is historically quite common. Various Arab and Muslim tribal leaders allied themselves with the Europeans for their own needs during the Crusades. Some French tribes allied with the invading Muslims for their own ends in the 8th C. The history of European conquest of the New World is a history of one tribe allying with the Europeans against their more local enemies/competitors to achieve dominance in their area. US foreign policy in some conflicted areas used to openly acknowledge that "he's a SOB, but he's our SOB." We allied with the Soviets in WWII.

Too often, groups bring in a powerful ally with the idea that they can control him or at least influence him down the road. Their visceral desire to be Top Tribe in their own area clouds their ability to assess their real dangers.

Thus, American and Western European progressives willingly embrace communists in their battle against capitalism, regardless of the track record. Capitalism rewards the Wrong People, you see. Some people who don't know who Camus is get not only rich, but famous and honored. Progressives know that any intelligently-organized society would have them in all seats of honor, and so must work to undermine the system that does not support their bullying narcissism.

Tribal. All politics are local? Nay, all politics are tribal.

Semivolitional repetition syndrome probably works as an explanation in some cases, but I'm having a hard time distinguishing it from such other possible causes as: complete lack of much of a memory function at all, abject inability to learn much of anything, or the fear-denial-delusion, projection, displacement, paranoia, wish fulfillment etc., explanations - or from the virtually psychotic perseveration, echolalia, +/- hallucinatory processes.

At least they all seem capable of producing the same, apparently permanent dysfunctional results - along with some other, biologic and chemical agents, such as lead, mad cow prions, and hootia 21 -- not to mention tertiary syphilis.

So at my next meeting with Carl Rove, perhaps I'll suggest a trial at least involving the secret lacing of all water and beverages in California with Thorazine. We must start some tests of possible therapy at once!

If only for the children.

The repetition compulsion is most appropriate in the Venezuelan situation. Right now Chavez is squandering hundreds of millions of dollars from his country's oil revenues.
In the 1980s the Venezuelan economy collapsed when the 1970s oil boom went bust. Hundreds of millions of dollars had been squandered by the Venezuelan government, which ignored the basic needs of the sizeable poor population, instead of providing for good elementary and middle school education and basic infrastructure such as running water and electricity.

Those poor, who went ignored then, are Chavez's constituents.

Sometimes in a free market system ruthless robber barons wind up as philanthropists, and oil sheiks are covert Islamofascist supporters - probably to help keep the disgruntled po’folks from storming their castles.

But Chavez (and Ahmadinejad) doing something like this to gain popularity with their own po’folks – and it also seems, everyone elses?

Maybe they should just STFU until they’ve successfully used progressive and free market ‘pump-priming’ policies to build cash flow machines for their own people (I was gonna hold up Dubai’s Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as an example of economically beneficial ‘power-narcissism’ but just found out he may not be entirely against slavery. Oh well, back to the old search engine..).
