Gravatar I like the labels you put on this post

I can't believe that someone would actually say those things out loud. And you just know that others will be nodding their heads and saying "Oh, me too."

I have a suggestion for a future question on this topic - if this is the way some Republicans speak, why do so many poor people vote for Republicans? Is it really just God, gays and guns (and war and abortion) or something else? Maybe thinking that one day they will be rich and be selfish assholes themselves?

Gravatar Andrew - I like you're idea, and i'll write on that.

Gravatar We live (unfortunately) in the heart of Republicanville - suburban Houston, and it does seem to me that these views (that the federal govt. should not help anyone, at anytime) seem to be widely shared. We have some older friends (four are retired, two more are close to that situation), and they are all comfortable, financially, and obviously able to take care of themselves - and are unabashedly Republican. My spouse and I do not even mention that we don't share their views - they are that adamant, and nothing we could say would dissuade them.

We are anxious to return to MN, where it is okay to say that you are a liberal and not be vilified. And where many folks think that it is okay to offer assistance to those in need.

Gravatar I wonder if the Republican lady actually knows how much her folks had to pay for the operations she had. Was it 5% of their net worth, perhaps 10%, or everything they owned? We need more information. In 1960 I had a baby and the hospital cost was $14 per day. We could have paid it if we had had no insurance even though I stayed 10 days following a non-complicated delivery.

Today couldn't 3 operations easily be more than an ordinary family's net worth? It is scary when people base their political decisions on their childhood memories of a country which is so different from the present one.

Gravatar Hey - long time no post! I must chime in, however. Two things stick out for me: selfishness and ignorance. And I mean that in the nicest way. "I want to pay for it and control it myself" can only come from someone with money. So - ultimately she could care less about anyone with less money than her. And ignorance? She does and will continue to pay MORE for other people as long as they don't have health care, go to the emergency room, can't afford the emergency room, and then the hospital writes it off. I have so much trouble understanding why people can't actually research and see that countries that have more socialized medicine are functioning very well - thriving even. What will it take? Grrrr. I mean, I don't have kids, but I pay for school lunches too - and I get no tax breaks on my cats, but that's ok....because would I rather think 'yeah, let that kid go hungry'? This woman WANTS a huge schism between the haves and the have nots. For her defense to be 'my parents paid for it' is the ultimate in spoiled brat politics.
