Speaking of tofu, the way to eat tofu is at a good Korean restaurant. Amazing dish!

Hey Alessandra, Nice of you to pop by--and to notice my shameless commercialistic streak! We actually do use all of these guys. I shop way too much at Sierra Trading, for just about everything clothes and outdoors related. Walmart pretty much covers the rest! I've been taking Purity "perfect multis" and Omega-3 supplements, since I'm a bit of a health nut, for years. Plus, since lactose is one of the many things I'm intolerant of, I also have tried a lot of soy shakes and bars to get more protein in my diet (we don't eat a lot of meat). I can't stand most tofu... except, the firm sort cubed in hot and sour soups at Asian restaurants. I don't think I know of any Korean restaurants in my fair city.
The Revival shakes (at least they don't call them "Resurrection" shakes!) and soy bars are just the best I've ever tried. I get a shake called "Chocolate Dream" which I often mix with orange juice instead of just water, and add a banana in the blender. It's heavenly! Oh well, now I'm hungry!
I hope the crass commercialism doesn't offend folks. I'm going on a year next month of blogging and have probably cleared around $30 in commissions!!! And that was mainly from when I used to have Click Ads on the site. Pretty funny.
At least the ads really, really annoy liberals when they pop by--so there is that!
All the best,
D. Ox

I guess I should have prefaced my little attempts at jokes with something of a disclaimer. It is true that when my eyes first glanced at the the ad links, just by the type of product, I wasn't sure if it was part of the humor you so nicely write in your posts. Then I looked at the shake site and it looked real enough. I hope I didn't come across as too critical. Sorry if I did.
I have a lot to learn about how to improve my diet regarding getting nutrients, it's something that I struggle with. It's not the nutrition information, which I partly lack, it's more just doing it: eating healthily. My stomach, however, does not seem to like soy, because it just seems to stay undigested for hours, not a good feeling. But what I really want to change is to increase and vary more the veggies. I eat the same 3 or 4 veggies all the time. Maybe I should start a veggie-eating support group. (LOL)
I also don't like beef, and for taste reasons I started veering more and more into getting my protein from varied dairy products and then I got an iron deficiency. It makes your body feel this profound fatigue, which is so scary, it feels like you have 3 months to live. So, the doctor told me to change my diet, and now I am back to eating at least one daily meal with poultry, fish, or pork, and I am better, I feel better, plus I was given iron supplements.
To "encourage" (read "force") myself to eat more fruits, I go for days without buying any sweets or desserts, and so when dessert or snack time comes, I don't immediately go for the chocolate bar. Nutella I buy once a year I love just about all fruits, but if there is something sweet, it usually works like a magnet for my brain. I haven't yet fully understood what's going on there.
re supplements, I used to think it was a money-making hype, but that's another thing I should get more info on. Nowadays there are 300 options to choose from, apparently all are good for you and should be taken -- I have no idea what I should do. The result is I take the plain old multiple vitamin pills. I have never noticed any visible beneficial effects from taking them vs not taking them, so I just hope that's how it is. Hopefully, even though we can't see the results, my body is healthier for it and I'm not just wasting my money.

I am a big fan of Dr. Andrew Weil. He's had a number of best sellers, but he's a very smart fellow anyway! He's a Harvard M.D. who devoted his life to studying alternative and traditional medicines. His website is drweil.com. The one book of his that I'd recommend for someone looking to wade through all the health info and get to the nitty gritty is his "Optimum Health" book. He does not hype supplements AT ALL and gives the science and common sense behind everything. He integrates exercise, meditation and even "spiritual" components of what he calls optimum health. His approach has become called "integrative medicine" and is catching on among some docs.
I'll put some links to the books of his I recommend down at the bottom of my blog latter today! (Crass commercialists like me have thick skins!)
Got to run to take one of the little Oxen late to work and then hit the gym!
Ciao all!
