This seems much more fair than an attempted murder charge.
There is a problem with the coercive nature of plea bargaining, especially when you have racist judges and the likelihood of racist juries.

One of my students is writing his research paper on this issue, interviewing both his g-mother and great-g-mother, who were active in the civil rights movement down in Louisiana back in the day...It will be interesting to see how he compares the state of (in)equality between then and now...
