The debates are going to be extremely important. If McCain goes on the offensive effectively, he can do some serious damage. But my fear is that he is going to just throw softballs.

You may be right. However Obama isn't great at debates so McCain might be a able to pull in some swing votes. That however won't do him any good if he can't turn out the base though.
