$\"Gravatar\"$ This was a great post. It really presents a clear understanding of the roles of godparents and sponsors and why care should be given when selecting both.

One thing this brought to mind was the selection of myself and my then fiance (now husband) as godparents for my niece. Shortly after we became engaged, my niece was born and we were asked to be her godparents. I applauded the faith my brother and his wife had in us and that our relationship would indeed culminate in a valid church marriage.
