Gravatar As a boy growing up in Charleston in the 60s. I remember well the degaussing station and the almost daily parade of wooden minesweepers that took advantage of its service. I'm still not clear whether the demise of the degaussing station was due to technology or the demise of our minesweepers.

Gravatar as an Iron Man, who sailed on a Sweep.

I am very deguassed..!;-})

I also wear a shiny metal 'surface warfare' belt buckle - which never causes a problem for me at airports, much to the disappointment of TSA agents.

Gravatar Thanks for that interesting article. The first ship I ever sailed on (in 1982), Shell Tanker's S/S 'Zafra', still had parts of the degaussing system on board. The cables were long gone (allegedly sold for their copper), but the Ward-Leonard converters were still in place.

Gravatar during a long career working in a navy yard i saw and worked on a lot of "non magnetic" equipment.

it's all stainless steel, bronze, wood, aluminum, etc.etc.etc.

really expensive during the WWII era and had some really odd problems.

very little of it was weldable and that caused considerable problems until the middle seventies when the welders got so that they could weld the non magnetics semi easily.

Gravatar My father worked on degaussing as a physicist for the Navy during WWII. I am looking for any photos, MANUALS, and anecdotes from this period for my research (one article in press). Please contact me!!

Gravatar Hi
All your comments I think are valid and very interesting .I do think the technology that the ships have had in the past, have now been upgraded, there methods have been applied to some degree with aircraft in use these days to protect themsleves from some forms of attack ,this is an educated guess, just that other materials are being used to counter weight problems these days.

The Philadephia Experiment probably did happen and was an accident waiting to happen ,that's how we go forward in technology,it usually starts in a some person's back shed ,bit like the film young Einstein you have to experiment to acheive new ground ,even if you blow up your shed a few times hopefully not in it at the time ,but good fun .best to have those type of shed's away from population if possible ,just causes bad neighbour syndrome !

I am in the flt simulation fields so not totally a thick ,but keep a very open mind on all subjects old and new in technology, bottom line is whatever you manage to build sooner or later it will attract other intelligence to come knocking on your door or in some cases appear in your domain from thin air or just your friendly beef cake from the Military where ever you are !

One last comment keep an eye on John Searle yes he is progressing on a machine using magnetic frequency that might just save us all from having to stick with oil/gas , so keep an open mind on him and support his work . I really hope John Searle does not go the way a certain Dr kelly went, a weapons experts who is supected of being bumped off by our beef cakes when he was about to reveal the truth to the world!
