Good post. I transit this area on trips from Europe to the Persian Gulf on a merchant ship regularly. The convoy system would likely work but as you point out it would cause delays. I was thinking the IMO should establish some recommended routes in the Gulf. With a route at least the ships would be less spread out and Navy/Law enforcement vessels would be closer by. Plus ships could assist each other if required.

Maritime nations should reinforce the traditional (and legal for all I know) right of protection against piracy. The navies should attack the pirates at sea.

Davod - If a vessel is in distress it is said to "require assistance", - I should have said "if needed"

I'm kind of surprised that private security companies haven't stepped into this role.

I would assume that for owners the cheaper option to private security is paying higher insurance premiums. - No owner is going to take this step on their own, it would have to be mandated.
