Gravatar When you mentioned the use of shallow draft FS craft, the first thought was the comedy movie with Jack Lemon, The Wackiest Ship in the Army.

Thanks for the history lesson.

Gravatar I would also recommend sloan Wilson's Ice Brothers, about small shipm operations around Greenland.

Gravatar Great post! I learned a lot.

Gravatar Great Post.
I had the pleasure of serving aboard the USNS Range Sentinel out of Cape Canaveral back in the 80's. Range Sentinel also started out in WWII as a supply ship.
I think I shaved with it this morning.

Gravatar Several FS's can still be found in Oregon and Washington. Here are links to a few FS class vessels which can be found on the West Coast:

1. an almost perfectly original FS named BETSY ROSS in Astoria,OR. up until 2003 it was a training vessel for the Job Corps maritime program at Tongue Point just outside Astoria

2. an FS converted to an Alaskan crab processor named the AKUTAN...now laid up and for sale

3. an FS converted to a fishing vessel named the SEABIRD which previously had been a Navy torpedo retriever based at Keyport, WA named the NEW BEDFORD

I know there are a few more out here but cannot find any reference to them on the net. Fyi, the BETSY ROSS sold for $40k when the GSA auctioned her in late 2003 and still had her COI at the time! If only there was some way to make her pay for herself.

Gravatar Thats funny I am back. I just posted at short sea shipping. Now I am looking for photos of my old ship, the Snowbird. It was an old FS. We used to run Seattle to Alaska, about 20 years ago now.

Thanks for the great post

Gravatar My dad Howard Emil Thomas served on fs 410 during wwii. Do you have any info you could share ?

Gravatar I served on the USAF 1839 out of Receife, Brazil starting in October 57 as a messboy and it was my first trip. Being an electronic tech in the Marine Corps previously, I fixed the ships radar when no one in the ships crew could. I read the schematic and then changed the fuse.

After that I was offered a job as a tech by the RCA downrange manager, who as it turned out was the navy commanding officer of the naval electronics school I attended while in the Marine Corps.

I only stayed on board for a few shots but had a great time. Would anybody know what the ship's (USAF 1839) name was?

Rich Eisele

Gravatar My friend,William Celello having served on the MV China-FS 280 during WWII is celebrating his 83rd birthday this month (August, 2009)

If possible, I am interested in purchasing a photograph of that ship to give to Bill for his birthday.

Thank you.

Jerry Jackson
