Wow, that touched a chord, the first house I can remember living in was a Quonset at NAS Alameda. We moved into a regular house after that (my folks first home) but I've had a soft spot for the Q-huts ever since.
Ya know, people are constantly clamoring for housing for the homeless.....

I bet you like the History Channel and shows like How Its Made. Thanks for the memories of a time gone by. There is a Quonset Hut about a mile or so from my house, I'll have to stop by and tell them of your article.

Well, Apra Heights had rectangular concrete block housing for my adventure like yours, but the SEABEEs base between there and the Naval Station was full of Quonset huts...

Now let's not forget the most famous Quonset Huts for Blackshoes of a certain age---the three that formed the original "Chuckwagon" at Naval Station Subic Bay, RP.
As a JO back in the pre-politically correct Navy I spent many an hour there eating lumpia, drinking San Miguel, and listening to Filipino bands play country and western tunes.

You know, C-dore, I completely forgot to mention the Chuckwagon featuring "Randy and the Boys" --though I certainly spent almost as much time there as in that place on Guam.
Why, I remember one night...

The "dirty shirt bar" I remember from my first stay in Guam was called the "Pump Room". I don't remember it being in a Quonset hut (might have something to do with my condition at the time). This place was leveled by a typhoon between 74-76 and the BOQ bar was renamed the "Pump Room" in its honor.

The first home I remember was a quonset hut at Roger Young Village. We came to California from Ohio when I was a little kid. We stayed there until my folks found a home in Burbank, right across the Los Angeles River. Eventually, the village closed and the area was the home to Travel Town.

Upper MAU Camp, Subic Bay in 1979 while chasing Ranger CV61 around WestPac.
Woke up one night and a mokey was sitting on the foot of my bunk just staring at me.

My father was seriously injured in a fire at Quonset Point NAS on October 16th, 1948. A brick building collasped and fell on him.His back was broken and his skull fractured. His only photograph from a newspaper clipping was lost by the VA when he attempted to apply for benefits in the late 1960's after living in pain for all of those years. Can you help me with some details of the fire and maybe some pictures.
