Being a flash Animator myself, I understand what it's like to give up .flas.

I only do that when I'm working with Jeff (also known as Nightmare Clock, who is my Flash Mentor), so he can help me out a bit or if I'm doing it as part of a collaberation. And that's because I trust him.

I would NEVER give my unprotected .fla to a guy like that!

Yeah, As being a flash animator you've always gotta be careful when your considering giving up your Fla's. If you give it to somebody else they ould screw you into the hole.

It sounds like you walked away from a very bad situation (and we get treated to a fresh take on characters, bkgs, etc. YEAH!!!)

Sam, I think you are in the wrong on this one. You obviously were hired for contract work, in which case you should give whoever is paying you all files. Not too sure why you would use your own characters in the animation you were making for someone else's production. Kind of unprofessional if you ask me...

Contract work doesn’t automatically give the client ownership of any source files unless requested and agreed upon by both parties (which was never discussed in this case). It’s the law. Look it up. I know I have. Also, he never paid me. Payment was to be made after completion. You seem to forget; as the graphic artist I also have rights and must protect my intellectual property at all cost.

Now a "Work for hire" DOES grant the client ownership of all work. However, he made this announcement at the last minute. I would’ve never agreed to this had I been told before beginning. I’m sure we both learned a lot from this experience. From now on I will work all these details out before doing any work in the future.

I believe I did the right thing. No regrets on my side.
