this is why we invaded Iraq

This is what pisses me off. The United States invaded Iraq because it could have had a nuclear weapons program. Now people are thinking about invading Iran because it could have had a nuclear weapons program.
North Korea said it had nuclear weapons… the United States ignored them. Now they have proven that they have nuclear weapons and the United States is still more focused on Iran.
Let’s consider why it would be bad if Iran or Iraq have/had nuclear weapons. Who would they attack? Israel.
Who would North Korea attack? The United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, Canada, New Zealand.
Looks like the US is worried about Israel more than its self.

The US policy toward North Korea is missile defense and MAD (mutually assured destruction). However bogus Star Wars satellites are now, it's cheaper to develop than invading the DPRK. Here are system descriptions:

http://science.howstuffworks.com.../space-
war2.htm
Additionally, the DPRK only has enough material for ~5 warheads. If they hit a few US cities, the rich people in the suburbs would survive and move to the remaining cities. So this is OK.
Iran and Iraq have oil. This is also good for rich people, so that's OK too.

The real question, Sam, isn't how best to condemn the Republicans, its been a given for 6 years that their gross incompetence and ineptitude has led to most of the geopolitical issues America faces today.
The question is, how do we solve this staggering conundrum?
If you liberals want to crawl from your convenient little bubble of shrugging off difficult questions by Bush-bashing, I'd like to hear some actual plausible solutions to this problem. Yes, we all know this is Bush's fault for ignoring the warnings, whats done is done.
Now what do we DO about it?
Invasion isn't an option, as Jong-Il can hide behind an inpenetrable shield of nuclear detterance, mutual assured destruction would result.
Blockade? Unlikely, if the North Koreans want those nukes out of the country, they'll get em' out of the country.
The only conceievable solution would be to pressure China into (finally) put an end to its support of Jong-Il and aid in multilateral sanctions. Which, in turn, would be unlikely, as China is seeking the best interests of the region, and a crumbling Korea (even with its currently pathetic economic stature) is most certainly not on the agenda.
So, whats going to happen next? You tell me.
I'll tell you one thing though, I really, really don't like where this is going, heres hoping China pulls through, if not.....god help us all.

(Asked whether he's just sit and wait on NK and see what happens.)
"No. I’d raise the cost to China of supporting him, and the benefits if they don’t. In the meantime I think what we have to do, and in fact are doing, is make certain that air-defense missiles and anything the Japanese ask for are given to them. And very publicly so. I believe some Patriot missiles are to be delivered there before the year is out. We want to tamp down the nationalist, chauvinist demand in Japan as they go nuclear themselves. When they tear up the history books that they don’t like about the Second World War—we have an interest in tamping that down and in their keeping the constitution pacifist. If the Chinese don’t care about this, or are irresponsible enough to watch it happen without stopping it, we can’t be neutral about that."
~Christopher Hitchens, Vanity Fair.
Now, I don't agree with Hitchens on a lot of things, but there is no question that he is a very bright guy, and unlike most of the trash the right regurgitates nowadays in the form of bimbos like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, and the like, he puts up a pretty coherent argument. I'd have to agree with his take on the North Korean question, opinions?

And I wasn't contesting your facts, I completely agree.
But....thats a very depressing prospect man, I think theres still a chance to remedy the damage Dubya has done. Not saying it'll happen, but I think its possible, it'll be a daunting task however, good thing we have such established leaders to show us the way eh? (sarcasm) :P

Why is every po-dunk dictatorship in the world trying to develop nukes?
Don't they know that the west leaves po-dunk dictatorships alone (or even merily supports them.) if they cooperate with western business interests?
Not that thats the ideal situation. But it beats the alternative.

Mick - I believe you hit the nail on the head. The US hates the DPRK because it won't allow US businesses in. Not submitting to economic slavery is a capital offense to capitalists.
The US could smooth things out anytime it wants, but it has no intention of doing so. The US stopped construction on the 2 nuke plants, the DPRK started enriching uranium; the US stopped shipping fuel oil, and the DPRK made a nuclear warhead.

The DPRK is a scared rabbit. I certainly hope the US doesn't startle it.

I think the scariest thing isn't so much the DPRK itself, but the idea that, strapped for cash as they are, they'll sell a nuke to someone like Osama.
(Y'know, the guy Dubya can't catch to safe his yeehawing life.) Or maybe some wealthy Saudi sheik who pretends to like the west, but funds all sorts of militant groups in secret.
Maybe an air raid on the DPRK's nuclear facilities might work? I mean... you can find those things on google earth, so don't tell me they don't know where those are. Don't invade, just bomb the facilities to dust. It ought to cause SETBACKS to their nukeproducing at least, and that gives you some more time. Plus air raids may not be free, but they are far less costly then invasions.(Which is what I bet Dubya would do in his infinite lack of wisdom.) And over much faster too.

Hmmm...
US air raids would likely ignite an invasion of South Korea by the DPRK, which has always been the concern in the area. If satellite images showed the North getting ready for a launch, though, I doubt anyone would hesitate to drop bombs.
I'm not sure the DPRK would sell the nukes. The Koreans feel VERY threatened by the US and are looking for a deterrant rather than an attack.
The easiest way to solve the nuclear problem would be for the US to sign a treaty formally ending the Korean War (which was never an official war, not signed for by US Congress, and so has never ended), and sign an agreement to not invade the DPRK. The Koreans have been begging to have this for years. The weapons production would probably scale back immediately.

Hey, even better. If a treaty is signed you don't even have to fire on anyone.
And you can always tell them that if they DO get the unholy idea to sell a nuke and that nuke is used against the west, we'll nuke them in retaliation.
So then they got the treaty, and an incentive.
I admit... Not getting an incentive like that is like saying 'Do this and your reward will be not to get a beating.'
But still.. Mutually Assured Destruction did seem to keep the USSR and the US from nuking eachother to dust. So...

Yeah, this sounds like a much better plan.
Having third-party terrorist delivery systems is a new challenge. Again, I doubt the DPRK would try, but even if they did...
Nukes are big. Can't sneak 'em through customs. Fissile material would have to come through, and the bomb assembled in the US. However, the FBI keeps a close eye on explosives and triggers, so it would be nearly impossible to do it without them knowing.
Then again, the FBI knew about 9-11 since 1995, and they still let that happen!
