Most of the stores that I was in last week didn't offer a choice - they only had paper bags. Even if you asked for plastic, you couldn't get one. Paper ones have their drawbacks - plastic ones are easy to fold up, shove in a pocket, and re-use. A paper bag strong enough to carry books is not as easy to re-use. I wound up throwing out paper bags, whereas if they had been plastic I would have made further use of them.
