I've seen them in Toronto and in Quebec City. So far, they're done in parallel with regular cashiers, which suggests that the transition will take a while.
My labour economics colleagues visit France regularly, and they report that many jobs that are done by people here - like cashiers, hotel clerks and parking attendants - are largely done by machines over there. Virtually all grocery checkouts are self-serve. They attribute this to the higher minimum wages in France.
But this story wouldn't explain why you saw them in Houston. Very odd.
They've been in Calgary grocery stores for about a year now. A new Home Depot opened before Christmas, and as far as I can tell, it only has self-serve registers.

check out.
But they also have another checker at the exit that compares the sales slip with what is in the basket.They had this before self check to keep people from just walking out with the merchandise. Recently the checker continued to search my basket for a long time and a buzzer kept going off. It seems I had bought an item with theft protection but it was at the bottom of the basket and concealed by other purchases. The exit checker had me move forward a few feet while he was checking my basket to get the buzzer to stop.
So they have a double check to deal with theft protection and what appears to be a more complex machine at the door to read the devices then you generally see at most stores.
I guess having one person working at several self check registers to help customers and one at the door is still more efficient.

Hi... I think self-serve checkout are good as long as there are still servicing ones. Just think of those moms with 6 kids. I don't think she really wants to bag her groceries. Im also righting out this comment to see if it works. Im doing technology
