This is awesome! I hope I get to see it...We are really busy on the river this week and I've been guiding two trips a day down the Mighty Nantahala. If I'm not working tomorrow morning, I'll watch the event and hopefully chime in on the web here with you. If I am working, know that I'll be thinking about the match. I'm gonna root for Serena in this one.

Cooper - I'm with you. I'd like to see Venus get her 5th title and get more comfortably in the ranks of Billie Jean, Martina, etc. Aren't we blessed to be seeing the greatest sports story (IMHO)of the last 25 years unfold before our eyes? GO WILLIAMS!
I would love to see Venus claim another. She's the class act of the two IMO, but I think Serena is a smarter, less predictable player. Serena is likely to be the winner, but I'm pulling for Venus. Good to see Venus defending her title despite being dissed by the All England Club (7th seed indeed!). They didn't have a problem dropping Blake's seeding, but they couldn't elevate the defending champ's? Well it worked out great for the Wms sisters, so all's well that ends well. Go Venus!
I beg to differ with the post that says both sisters are role models. Serena cusses on court, denigrates her opponents, is surly and rude when she loses. She wouldn't be a role model for my kid.

I watched Serena play Zheng and thought she'd take her to three sets and then beat her. I'm of the camp that watching them play sister tennis isn't exciting at all.
It's going to be weird regardless of who wins, because they have to return to the court and play doubles.
I was thinking today that it'd be better for the sport if they were NOT sisters, but competitors. Where's Chanda Rubin when you need her?
While I don't think their matches are predetermined by their parents, I think Venus "could have" won more of the Grand Slams by now instead of trailing 5-1.
Not to root against Serena, but I'd have LOVED to have seen Venus play Zheng in the final. But, maybe not, she whipped all those other lanky Amazons, maybe Venus would have fared a similar fate.

I can't wait to see this match! The Williams sisters have proven, once again, that you don't have to come of age within the tennis establishment to be able to dominate the game. I think it's especially telling that most of their earlier rivals have already retired. I think these two will just get better and better, for as long as they wish to stay in the game.

Both of them play so well though Ken, I think that they have no choice but to throw the kitchen sink at each other, which leads to mistakes. And as you've been saying all along, Venus has a tendency to start slow.

Dave, I felt like most of them were gone when Maria Sharapova slid her extremely lucky self through. The Williams sisters can't help it if after all of the talk that they have "too many outside activities," that they are STILL going strong.

Serena seems resolved NOT to fight, not to play.
The problem with that though Ken is that since they never know in which tournament they will actually reach the final, they'd be short changing themselves an opportunity to possibly win another grand slam.

Serena ALWAYS wants to win and as Sheila mentioned, she wouldn't care if it was her mama on the other side of that net. I think everyone could tell she was hugely disappointed with this loss. Venus outplayed her today plain and simple. Onto the doubles...I would LOVE to see them win this title!
That match was intense... I think that you guys were too critical about the quality of the match considering the stage and the stakes.
Ha...too funny! You all made me laugh hard. I didn't get to see the match until the last few points and then saw Venus win (on a small TV screen in front of one of the bikes at the gym), but your blow by blow commentary (and jokes!) let me know pretty much how it all went down!

I also wonder what the hell happens to Serena when she plays big sis? Some serious self induced head game nonsense going on there for sure. I think she feels some type of guilt for wanting to beat Venus or something, and it f's with her during the games.

Shelia i noticed there are a great amount of comments about the William sisters right now so I would like to take this time to encourage my black brothers and sisters who are able, to help some young brother of sister playing tennis who is trying to follow in the sisters footsteps and keep black professional tennis alive. I am sure we all know of one young black tennis players who could use our help. Be it with strings, tennis balls, grips,match play,advice, and etc. Black tennis will not continue to grow without the support of the black tennis community.So let's make sure that this party is just starting and some brothers will coming be invited next time.

You know Fitness Diva, while I think that both Venus and Serena played one another better this time than they ever have, I imagine that the head games that you would have to play on yourself to play a sister that you're tight with must be immeasurable. Since it hasn't happened before to this degree, there's really no standard for how to deal with it. I think that it's one of those things that only they can figure out.
