The Education Wonks

Gravatar Come on over to Spunky's the conversations is flowing and the meals are always together. Wouldn't trade it for the world (or a government provided boxed meal.)

Gravatar At my elementary school over 95% of the students qualify for free or reduced meals so they eat breakfast here anyway. The only problem is that for some breakfasts the only protein is in the milk which doesn't seem to last long in their little tummies (if the kids drink it at all). I don't care if the government claims it's a complete breakfast, they need some lean meat or cheese to go along with it.

Gravatar Lots of packaging = lots of trash

Echo parental responsibility issue....why aren't parents providing for their kids? Maybe social services should be called????

Our school serves up similar slop for breakfast....cold cereal, pre-packaged carbs (sweet roll, cookies....), maybe somekind of sweetened juice (gotta have that corn sweetner since our government buys so much of it) and milk. LoFat milk. Not whole milk. And here in the Great Socialist Peoples Republic of California, milk MUST contain vit. D. or it cannot be sold in the stores or given to kids at breakfast or lunch.

Gravatar That's not breakfast. Eat all those carbs and an hour later you're starving. Where's the protein? Egads...virtual food for virtual learning...

Gravatar I personally am truly frightened by the food served in schools.

People wonder why children are so poorly behaved. Look at what we feed them.

Gravatar "...eggs, sausages, pancakes, and waffles."

I love that stuff too, but if you haven't got a 14 hour day of farming ahead of you, you might live longer starting your day with Shredded Wheat and soy milk...

Gravatar It was a '70s thing.

Gravatar I wish that parents would find time to eat with their kids, too. But it often isn't happening. Some kids make their own breakfasts. Some kids' parents throw cereal on the table as they race out the door to work. Some kids get no breakfast at all.
So while I wish it weren't necessary, I'm glad that schools are providing food.
And for those who find themselves having to race out the door in the morning, Pop Tarts in the car aren't the only way to feed your kids, or yourselves. Readers of the Smart Spending message board offer a lot of ideas for do-ahead or outside-the-box breakfasts that are fast, nutritious and cheap.
