The Education Wonks

Gravatar It's better to teach them to fight back than lie down and be cowards.

Gravatar I just read a thoughtful discussion at Joanne Jacobs' site about "fighting back". I also heard a talk radio interview with the Wisconsin legislator who wants to allow teachers to be armed (that's different from "arming teachers").

I'm starting to come around on this one. There's nothing noble about dying to protect your students. And following the directions of sociopaths, hoping they'll spare you, isn't a sound strategy--there's a reason they're sociopaths.

Gravatar Hi,
I am a teacher in California, far from being right wing, but if someone comes in my class with a gun, there are 25 of us and one of them. I will step in front of a bullet and tell my class to do everything they can to beat this person down.
Hiding under the desk isn't going to save anyone.
I am in charge of protecting my students.
Come in my room, we will throw desks, books, everything, he won't make it out and my kids will go home with their parents and not in a plastic bag.

Gravatar Hmm. Let's see: Fight back or die...fight back or die...tough one.

Gravatar I think I might have mentioned this to you before, but parents in NY who don't show up when called to school are guilty of neglect.

Maybe you ought to drop a dime to your local legislator (though I hear you often have to pay them more nowadays).

Gravatar Indeed, as there is nothing noble about giving up your belongings to a mugger so he won't hurt or kill you. That's cowardice, pure and simple. Nothing more, nothing less.

Gravatar I will *not* take a bullet for my students. My own child comes first, and I'm not going to leave him fatherless just so I can be a hero to some people who probably don't even know my name (my students' parents).

Much like the Patton speech, I'd rather the other poor dumb you-know-what, the sociopath, die for his beliefs.
