The Education Wonks

Gravatar Aye-ye-ye-ye-ye… that's all I could muster after reading this one.

Gravatar Way too common. The babies are now seen as a status symbol. Sometimes the girls actually try to get pregnant in order to try and trap the boy. It is too sad.

Gravatar Ever heard of sterilization?

Gravatar I interviewed a woman who was a grandmother at 29 when I was a columnist at the San Jose Mercury News. She had her first child at 14. The difference is that she married the father of her kids, who was one year older. Her sons, fathers at 15 and 16, also married their girlfriends. The daughter, a mother at 16, was engaged to be married. The youngest son had waited till he was 18 to get his girlfriend pregnant, a family record. All males in the family worked. The daughter was on track to be the first in the family to finish high school.

Gravatar I have a 13 and an 11 year old boy and they get called by these pushy girls day and night, meet me here and meet me there..I cant let my sons out of the house and I actually moved out of a city area and out of an urban setting because of it. These girls wanted to trap my sons! Their friends already have babies and walk around with them like trophies..it is so sad..not with my sons you dont! I would wind up supporting the whole family!

Gravatar But since the males (can't say "fathers") obviously AREN'T trapped, what in the world are they trying to do? With no accountability, they are anything BUT trapped.

The only ones trapped are the mothers of the babies, and sometimes their families.

Gravatar well, if they dont want to go to jail they are trapped and where I live I have two friends whose sons were young dads and the babies were deposited on thier doorsteps. I agree that sometimes and most of the time the females get the rawer deal, but it can be bad both ways. and believe me the girls are VERY aggressive as far as wanting to have sex. Most of the boys my sons know would rather be in athletics than go out with girls, if the girls would just quit doggin them.

Gravatar Yeah, it used to be wearing a guy's ring was a status sign of his neverending love and loyalty, and now its the bulging belly that is a public pronouncement of 'true love'. I am a school nurse and I have seen it time and time again.(57 times this year actually). Most of these pregnancies are no accident, albeit perhaps subconsciously. Knowledge or lack of it about birth control has nothing to do with it, imo.----

Gravatar Unfortunately, I have to back sphynx up on this one. I don't think it's helpful or even fair to play pile-on with the guys. Obviously, it would be best for all involved if the fathers would step up and marry the moms, support the kids. However, for the last 30 some years we've set up programs to help mom while ignoring the men who may be in need of help as well while treating him like a wallet to pull child support from (and have their credit ruined and end up in jail if they can't do it). If you talk to these guys they will say that they want to be dads and do the right things. But they don't know how. And a lot of these young grandmas have been hurt by the men who didn't do right by them and they pass on a message of complete independence to their daughters and become HUGE obstacles to the fathers being involved. It's much, much more complicated than just guys taking advantage of girls and leaving them in the lurch when a baby comes along. It's very sad, but just itching about the terrible guys isn't helpful or really fair. The whole thing is just sad.
