They can't get history and geography teachers? Social science teachers? They can get a higher percentage of math, science, and special ed teachers than history teachers?
I'll bet there are plenty of school systems that would like to have that problem.

Why blame DC? I sure as heck aren't going down to DC to teach even if they gave me a hefty bonus. I think teachers generally stay away from districts with a lot of kids that are .... let's say they are harder to teach than most. And if we teachers are going to be held accountable for our students' learning, would you want to be put in charge of a classroom there?
Also, if Geography is a license, how many people do you think there are that have that license? Does DC expect social studies teachers to get licenses in economics, World history, American history, and geography like science teachers have to specialize?

This is primarily a matter of the government of DC, which is not only serially inept, but malicious in its enmity towrd honest citizens, and insane in its support of ciminals and other unsavory special interest groups. DC is indeed getting the government it deserves, and should we be in any way suprised that the malfeasence extends into the public schools?

I blame NCLB: too much accountability, not enough rewards. If teachers could worry about each student instead of silly tests, we'd be much better off; more time to TEACH.

Well, look what D.C. has to work with. No surprises here.............Except, as I have said for 50 yrs....Education does not need more money....it needs slates and chalk...not laptop computers, not expensive books...and parents who will spank(god, forbid) their children and demand that they learn.....
