For me it's almost anything Hendrix or Joplin Summertime.

A few years ago a local store was selling these "A year in your life" CD's. I bought the 67 one in part because "Incense and Peppermint." (Did you know that lead guitarist Ed King later joined Lynyrd Skynyrd?
Did you know that Paul Simon wrote "Red Rubber Ball" and that one of the members of the Cyrkle had a last name of Simon, though he wasn't related.
Still I'd have to go with "I want to hold your hand" or "She loves you" as a song of the 60's.
Song of the 70's I've thought should be "More than a feeling." (I have it on a couple of anthology CD's.) Alternatively I could see American Pie or Year of the Cat.
I know so little of popular music since 1980 or so. It's funny, that stuff from the 50's was more contemporary when I started listening to the radio in 1972 than stuff from the 80's is now!

I was thinking Boston for the 1970s as well, although it would be hard to discount disco.
For some reason, for me Billy Idol would represent the 80s.

Actually, I suppose I did follow popular music into the 80's it's just that too much of it was that sterile techno stuff.
Flock of Seagulls was a good example of that especially with those hair dos. But maybe the quintessential 80's song should be: Video killed the Radio star that appropriately was the first song broadcast on MTV.
(Though Video killed the Radio star might actually be a 70's song.)

Decent choice, but it was released in 1979.
"Hungry Like the Wolf" would be a good candidate for the 80s as well.

There was more than one version of Video killed the radio star wasn't there?
Yes, groups like Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Men at Work thrived in the early days of MTV, and maybe because of MTV, so that's an excellent choice.

I think the song with the band makes STrawberry Alarm Clock a winner.... but song alone? That one about "Good morning, Starshine.... the earth says hellooooo-"
I'd put Mr. Roboto as the 80s, and "Stayin' alive" as the 70s.
For the 90s? Um...Probably something from Eminem..... (Sorry, I have a low view of my high school years. ;^))

Most 60's song? "I can Hear the Grass Grow" by the Move?

These are totally personal selections for me. I have taken the liberty to mostly pick more than one song for each decade.
60s:
"Ulven Peter" ("Peter the Wolf") by Peter Belli or "Dansevise" ("Dance-folksong") by Grethe and Jørgen Ingemann. The former is the single best blues-esque song I have ever heard, though the lyrics are genius by themselves (the wolf=boy "protecting" a girl from the naughty animals of the woods - it ends by the singer/wolf trying to convince the girl by bleeting like the sheep he says he has to disguise himself as to better protect her). The latter won us the European Song Contest in 1963: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m...related&

70s: "Convoy", hands down. And its not awful, either. Well that one, or Judas Priest: "Breaking the law" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYn5hxeFt10 - granted, it came out in 1980, but has a 70s feel for me
80s: Billy Idol: "Rebel Yell" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToeY7MkCm0c), Billy Joel: "We Didnt start the fire", Sting: "Russians" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rk78eCIx4E) and Genesis: "The Brazilian" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dNRcMcl1eQ). For some reason, the latter was to me about nuclear war.
90s: Nirvana: "Smells like teen Spirit" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPQR-OsH0RQ) and Saturnus: "I love thee".
2000s: Swan Lee: "I dont mind" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op_SuKL8_gA) and Mew: "Snow Brigade" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkV9igTdvB4).

Wow - that's some list! Billy Idol is a nice choice for '80s.
Asia might be a consideration as well for that decade.

The Age of Aquarius or Let The Sunshine In would be right up there for the '60s.

Man I thought this was about the 60's!
For my money the quintessential song of the 60's is the Stones' Satisfaction. There are tons of great songs, especially in the mid-decade... '64-'68... but the one that could represent the whole 60's vibe is Satisfaction.

Jack, great choices - but then I'm reminded of "Happy Together"....
Oceanguy - certainly up there, although I tend to think of songs that we don't hear as much nowadays because while it is evocative, I don't think it is transportive. (Which is probably not a word, but it sounds good. Crazy, man.)
