As I sorta said before, this is top-shelf cultural commentary that goes right to the heart of the real problem: for too many powerful people, art is merely another district to be attacked and overrun by propaganda. That's a battle too serious to lose.
Yeah, it's amazing that Simon used to be NR's film critic. He has a lot of flaws; splentic to the point of self-parody, highbrow in the worst sense of the term. But actually reviewed *movies*; his review didn't consist of attempts to declare whether a movie was conservatively correct, and they could be illuminating. I can't imagine anyone like that writing for a conservative magazine today.
