It would be a very interesting history project to explain how the college deferment program got up and running in the '60s (I don't believe, though I could be mistaken, that such deferments were available in Korean War). A strong case could be made that the college deferment program did more than anything else to divide the country between a class of smug kleptocrats and the rest of us.
It is an absolute outrage that the working class is making *all* of the sacrifices in this so-called war: their lives, their health, their marriages (divorces have doubled among the enlisted), their finances (reservists can't keep their jobs), their freedom (*now* they tell 'em they can keep 'em indefinitely).

amen Brother Humphreys.
Retardo, I read that link to Hitchnes smug ass Slate piece-and I gotta say that, taken with that Guardian piece on his appearance with his brother- a rather nasty portrait of the real Hitch, a la Dorian Grey, is emerging.
I direct your attention to two rather revealing quotes: "...civilians give crisp orders to soldiers and soldiers are expected to obey." and " Did I send my own children to the World Trade Center...No, I expected (there's that word again) the police and firemen to accept the role of gruesome death on my behalf." There's a breezy arrogance in tone, and its really no different than his treatment of the women he told to "fuck right off" when she asked him not to smoke in her face.
Old boy really is really savoring running with the big dogs. I can't imagine the Orwell of "Homage to Catalonia" or "Wigan Pier" busting off a couple of elitist quips like those above. Gimme my tin foil hat, cuz I'm starting to think maybe Brother John Birch had a point bout these self described Marxists like Hitchens and Darth Podhoretz. They were down with the proletariat and 4th Internationales when it served their ends of wresting power from the old line WASP/Oxbridge elite, but jumped ship to the right as soon as they were promised a prime slot on the bridge table just as the left as a political vessel was taking on water.
