Retardo, I agree with everything you are saying (especially about bloody fools like Hitch and Friedman) except for one: "the three peoples of Iraq are secessionists."
My understanding is that the Sunni Arab regions are not secessionist - they would like a unified Iraq. This is because the big oil reserves are in the South (mainly Shiite Arab) and the North (where the Sunni Kurdish predominate). There is little in the middle where the Sunni Arabs live. For this reason, they have no interest in the country breaking apart.
