Gravatar Retardo/HTML - of all the stuff I've read about MJ the last few weeks, this is the first piece that even mentioned the effects his religious upbringing may have had on him. Thanks for the insight.

Wow, that is some potent shit.

The thoughts about Jehovahs Witnesses, and "Totalitarian Religion" in general, remind me of a woman I lived with for a few years. She wasn't a JW, but Seventh Day Adventist. Her family were all 7th Day, but actually fairly reasonable considering their religion. Still, 7th Day Adventism sounds a lot like JW. The Adventists celebrate their sabbath on Saturday, believing that since the switch to Sunday was due to the Roman Emperor Constantine, all Christians who celebrate the sabbath on Sunday are condemned to Hell. In fact, in the End Times, all the Christians who Celebrate the Sabbath on Sunday will become like zombies, or demons, and will oppress and try to kill the tiny group of true believing 7th Day Adventists. However it will only be the 7th-Day Adventists who cleave to the teachings of their church-- no alcohol, no meat, no dancing, no immoral sex, who will, in the end, be saved.

She would mostly ignore these teachings, as she loved dancing and music and sex. But I would sometimes see that she had absolutely black despairing moods. She had an attitude of "the world is against me", and as we got closer to each other this became "the world is against us". She was paranoid about many things, especially those having to do with sex.

Eventually she studied her Bible some more, renounced Seventh Day Adventism, and became an Evangelical Christian. And overall she seemed much happier.
