i think that the fine halo is actually the cotton because i made my kyoto sweater out of tahki cotton classic which is a mercerized cotton and it has a small halo now as well. my guess is that's what happens when cotton is processed in that way. it becomes soft and the more wear and tear, the softer it becomes.

also, are you using fabric softener when you wash in the washer? this may also be causing more wear and tear on your handknits than you want. the main purpose of fabric softener is to break down the fibers so that they are, well, softer you may want to cut out all in-wash softeners and drying sheets.

Both of those sweaters are absolutely beautiful. Gleek - that's good info about the softener etc, I never really thought of what it does.
