Too bad about the raglan--but just think how excited you'll be to have a brand-new sweater when you actually get to use it!
Re: the row gauge, I oftn have trouble with it too. Sometimes it's possible to tinker with it by knitting with two different size needles. Might be worth swatching, at least, if wacky row gauge is going to throw the whole sweater off.

Your pics are gorgeous! I agree abou the tweed - I'm using it right now and it's so scratchy and a bit painful on my fingers.
Are you knitting it in pieces? Can the gauge be fudged during blocking? When I knit the CPH in a tweed yarn, I was able to get it to block to the correct measurements doing a good wet block/pinning.

sounds like that yarn you got for the "pregnant" sweater is a lot like the yarn from school products in manhattan. once the spinning oil is washed off it's awesome! too bad the sweater design isn't what you thought it would be i love the sunrise circle jacket! i can't wait to see how yours comes out.

Woe the raglan!! It's interesting to see the difference in the coned yarns before and after. I have some Zephyr DK on cones, but I haven't checked to see if it has oil on it...

Yeah, I find most wool tweeds scratchy to knit with, but then they usually bloom and soften like mad in the wash. If it really bothers your hands, maybe you could soak the skeins in some wool wash and hang them to dry before knitting with them.
Re: hourglass sweater, I can SO identify, and I'm so sorry! It took me years to accept that I just have to eliminate the waist shaping from any sweater I knit for myself. But accepting it has definitely saved me a heap of heartache!

Not that you're asking for advice on the unintentional maternity sweater...but you did this sweater in the round from the bottom up, right? If you want to rid it of the hourglass shape so you can wear it when you're NOT pregnant (which will be much more time than when you are), you can just run some waste yarn through a round of stitches at the waist (heh - waste at the waist), cut off the bottom part, and knit down to the hem without the offending bell shape. Does that make sense? I had to do that to a cardigan I did this winter because I had some annoying bell-like flare in the hip area (I'm not very curvy, either, in a non-pregnant state), and it worked well.
Actually, you're such an experienced knitter you probably already know that or thought of it or whatever...but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway
Sorry I don't have any suggestions about the row gauge issue in the Skye Tweed jacket. I think I'm actually the only knitter on the planet who is not so crazy about that particular design. Good luck, though!

I know this is not what you want to hear, but are you planning to have another baby someday? You could save the sweater and hope that you were pregnant in the wintertime! Arg!

all that tweediness! i felt that coned yarn at Webs when I was there last. I didn't end up getting any despite my nagging yarn buyer inside...it does look nice knitted up though. How about some radical blocking? Since you wanted a big, comfy sweater, what about blocking the top bigger and the bottom smaller? Even it out a little?

Ugh, this is such a harsh post. What a bummer! The yarn looks fabulous, though, so I'm sure you'll be stoked next time 'round. But still, grrr.

I'm sorry that the sweater didn't fit! It's probably the biggest fear with all knitted garments. I'm glad that you tucked it away for future use though - I hope you love it when you do get the chance to wear it!

Eegats! Row gauge. If someone does help you, definitely pass along the info. I've got no clue and that's caused probs for me for sure.

I am sorry that the first sweater didn't work out! But the tweediness of the new Sunrsise Circle, gorgeous. I noticed that the Skye Tweed was a little smelly when I broke open the bags, but I am bummed out that it is so rough to knit with. Great.

Elinor! It's been so long! I'm emerging from my exhibition summer funk and happy to find beautiful tweedy things (albeit misbehaving ones) on your blog to which I say yay! Also, I need your email address for a project I am currently concocting... email me!

I think your row gauge will work out fine with the way the front overlaps. You can just overlap it a little more or less. When I knit it my row gauge had more stiches per inch, so the sweater ended up being just a little longer and I had to overlap it more. I say just go with it. You may just want to line up the back to the front and subtract or add some row to make the back length line up. If you look up the Sunrise Circle KAL (closed now, but has good info) the designer left some notes in the sidebar about altering it.

I'm kind of glad to hear I'm not the only one who finds the Skye Tweed scratchy--sometimes I feel like a knitting poser because I don't dig the really woolly wools. Don't take my membership card away!
Nothing worse than a disappointing sweater. So much work! I hope the Circle makes up for it.

Hi, I followed Chocolate Sheep Beth's link to your blog and felt like I hit the jackpot! I got a GREAT-looking new pattern to try (Sunrise Circle Jacket), an online knitting newsletter, a free issue of Interweave Knits, and a great motto to try to live by (exercise before knitting). I should probably add "exercise before sitting down at computer"....
