Gravatar So I revisited the Planned parenthood site. They speak specifically about Paraguard. The Paraguard package insert specifically says:
Ideas about how ParaGuard works include preventing sperm from reaching the egg, preventing sperm from fertilizing the egg, and preventing the egg from attaching (implanting) in the uterus. ParaGard does not stop your ovaries from making an egg (ovulating) each month.

Hmmm...so an egg is available each month, and one of the functions of paraGard from it's own package insert is not letting the egg attach. Eggs only try to attach after fertilization. If a fertilized egg cannot attach because of this device, then this device is an abortifacient!

So then I looked at the Mirena package insert which says:
It is not known exactly how Mirena works, Mirena may work in several ways. It may thicken your cervical mucis, thin the lining of your uterus, inhibit sperm movement and reduce sperm survival. Mirena may stop release ofyour egg from your ovary, but this is not the way it works in most cases. Most likely these actions work together to prevent pregnancy.

Thinning the lining of the uterus makes it hostile to the newly conceived baby and this too is abortifacient.

Your BCH Health Guide linked above says:
The IUD also affects the uterine lining (where a fertilized egg would implant and grow).

Lastly i think it's funny that you mention my posting is 2 years old and then you present me with a 20-year-old paper!

Jon, I'm not a researhcer, I'm a blogger, this is my blog and my biases are truly out there. But in this case, the truth of how IUDs prevent pregnancy include very early abortion.

Gravatar I see this was written almost two years ago so it's hard to be too judgemental, but it's rather obvious you were not being at all objective when writing this.

First I would like to say that I love your site, the obama/mccain ads are cute (and true!) and that I firmly believe life begins at fertilization. Nor have I made up my mind one way or the other about IUD's.

Alright, now to the hard stuff. We all know that all drugs have side effects and choosing to list those side effects as a "scare tactic" is as I said not objective. Don't believe me? Let's look at the side effects of Aspirin:

* bruising more easily
* confusion
* dizziness
* fainting
* nausea or vomiting
* pain, buzzing or ringing in ears
* severe or continuing abdominal or stomach pain, cramping, or burning
* unusual tiredness or weakness

WOW I better never take that again! (said tongue-in-cheek).

Second you only look at ONE kind of IUD. Now maybe that's a simple mistake, but I doubt it because you chose to look at the one that uses the same drug as the pill, kind of a coincidence in my mind.

Moving on, I'll go along with "the horses mouth" saying what you have quoted. However that is no longer what their site says, and your link is broken.

http://www.plannedparenthood.org...d- 4245.htm#work

I'm not sure I'd call the "american pregnancy association" a "purely secular medical site" they are a site focused on pregnancy not medicine and therefore their stuff is going to be more outdated than others.

Here are a few, and all of them current, and all of them saying either it is unknown what action IUD's perform, or that it is blatantly NOT abortifacient.

http://familydoctor.org/online/ f...rinterview.html
(By the way, that's the same site as the AAFP)

http://www.fhi.org/en/RH/Pubs/ bo...ethodaction.htm

Lastly a few say that it does prevent fertilized eggs from implanting in "rare" cases.

http://www.bchealthguide.org/kba...9516/ detail.htm

http://www.fhi.org/en/RH/Pubs/Ne...16_2/ nt1623.htm "very rare" based on a 1986 paper!

Anyway bottom line is don't let your personal bias get in the way of your research, especially if you're going to be posting it for the world to see.

Gravatar However, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your birth control.

No, I don't think that's the most important thing.

Gravatar I think both points are valid. I think I've heard that it is considered an abortifact. However, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your birth control. I have a copper IUD and beleive it's the right choice for me, yes, cramping is increased, but it's tolerable. I'd suggest looking up he fertility awarness method. Before IUD I was successfully charting my ovulation and avoided pregnancy. Now my life is to stressful for it to be reliable, but I found it effective and wonderful when I was practicing it. Good Luck.

Gravatar No, I have not overlooked that. In the Catholic faith, the moment conception occurs, a newhuman being exists. WIth an IUD that human being is denied the opportunity to proceed in its normal course through implantation and pregnancy. That is abortion not contraception.

Thanks for commenting.

Gravatar I totally understand and appreciate your concern about the abortificient controversy. However, I think you've inadvertantly overlooked something--IUDs PREVENT implantation of eggs (contraception), not expel eggs that have already been implanted (abortion).

Therefore, IUDs, like the birth control pill or emergency contraception such as Plan B, are not abortifacients. RU-486, however, is.
