first of all, i freekin LOVED 'L.A. Story'.
one of my favorite bits:
'Why is that you never know when love starts, but you always know when it ends?'
the entire movie is almost like a tone poem to Los Angeles. Steve Martin is so underrated as a dramatic actor. but i know the English guy you mean...he always plays a bit of a fop.

God, but I adore anglophile americans. It's so funny seeing our culture reflected back at us.
FYI - if you ever come to London, I'll show you the best places to hang out & stalk Tom Baker. He's an easy one to get, I've seen him two or three times in Soho without even trying! You have to make sure you get him after lunch though, when he's had a *ahem* couple of drinks. I wouldn't have thought Tom was a sushi man, Christopher Eccleston probably is.
Anyhoo - they just *might* get it right this time - I'm not 100% sold on Eccleston myself though. Interestingly, the writing/directing [Davies & 'League of Gentlemen' Mark Gatiss] team are hard-core 'Whovians', and they're both queer too... Hmmm....

I first saw "LA Story" at a military base theater while I was stationed in Korea. I worship Steve Martin and had to see it the minute it came out. I thought it was merely "okay"...some great bits, but it was no "Jerk".
Then I moved to California.
You really have to visit/live in/know L.A. to truly appreciate that film. It's probably my favorite Steve film now.

Steve, I so want to visit London. You just don't know. Maybe next year, if nothing blows up.
If I got to meet Tom Baker, what would I say? Would he be charmed that this American even knew who he was? Or would he pull out a sonic screwdriver, make my pants buttons fly off, then run whilst I tried to pull them back up?
We must invent a new cocktail called "The Sonic Screwdriver". You're the bartender. Get on that.

In a tragic combination of gay and geek, my mother had one of her friends KNIT me a giantic Dr. Who scarf.
Of course, I wore it, and was loathed even more by my classmates...
