Dude, whats on yer mind?

Gravatar Do you accept knit squares?

Drew: Sure, as long as they fit the guidelines (ww acrylic, 12" square, etc). We love knit squares!

Gravatar I have a really stupid question; how do you not have a knot? You make a slipknot to begin with, then I usually make one to end, too. You mean with color changes? How do you join a new color and not have a knot? Is there something I am missing? Help... I have been crocheting for 16+ years and I don't know this.... Thanks Drew. (I will definitely be contributing, but I don't know how many or how soon.)

Drew: The big problem is a knot that has been trimmed way back with no ends to weave in. I usually use a knot but leave 6" tails on each color then weave those in real well. I just edited that paragraph to make it clearer, thanks for pointing that out.

And thank you for helping us out!

Gravatar Since you were so kind as to point me in the direction of Chris Simon's wonderful granny squares the least I can do is crochet a square or twenty for you. In bright fluorescent colors, of course.

Drew: Thanks April! It will help so many people get through difficult times!

Gravatar Thanks Drew, got your address and will get to work on some squares.

Drew: Thanks Julie! You Rock!!

Gravatar I'll send you some squares too drew!! I have lots of yarn I'm more than willing to part with, pretty colors, but not enuff for anything, so I'll use it for squares!! :D

Drew: Sounds great Madonna! I look forward to seeing them!

Gravatar So slipknots in the beginning are all right? I already have one square almost finished. The 'Ribbons and Roses' square. Thanks Drew.

Drew: Thanks Tina. I appreciate your support!

Gravatar "Granny Square" is my middle name! All you had to do is ask! My deep stash could use some bustin'! Look for some 12 inchers within the next few weeks!

Drew: Thanks Ellen, you're wonderful!!

Gravatar Is there a deadline to this? I'm interested to send in some squares from overseas...

Drew: Hi Little G! Thanks for sending squares. No, no deadline, just whenever you are able!

Gravatar Hey great idea Drew to ask for squares through your blog! We need all the help we can recruit!

On the knot issue... I always begin with a slip knot, but I don't knot when I change colors or finish off. I have seen somewhere a description on how you can begin a square without a knot, but a slip knot at the beginning is much easier for me.

I am going to (hopefully) finish up the HMB ghan I'm working on tonight and if all goes well it will start its journey to its recipients in Ohio tomorrow. Yay! Would be finished if I had worked my tails in as I went instead of waiting for the end, but I guess I get so ambitious to see it all together that I tend to forgo the tail weaving until the end. Ugh!

Then... I have two bearghans to assemble once I get all my squares in.

Drew: Good job Christi!!! If we all work hard then we can get these requests fulfilled quickly! You rock!

I never seem to weave as I go, no matter how much I tell others that it's the best way to do it. I seem to end up with an hour of tail weaving no matter what! LOL

Gravatar I think I can manage a square or two or more. Thanks for putting the word out.

Drew: Thanks Laura!!

Gravatar Who is doing all the joining? Do you need anyone local to do so at some point or do you send the squares on to someplace else for joining? If I can try to recruit others or go on a big crochet binge myself, is there somewhere local to drop off the squares rather than mailing (since I'm in Houston already)?

Drew: Hi Crow, I'd be happy to meet up somewhere to pick up squares. My LYS is Yarns 2 Ewe, are you near that? Email me when you want to get together for the drop off. Heartmade Blessings has a network of assemblers that I will distribute the squares to. I'm so happy that you will be donating some squares!!! You rock!

Gravatar Hi Drew, I'll be sending in squares as well. I hope to get one afghan worth per week and send them to you on Saturdays.

Drew: okay, now you're trying to get the dude all emotional. Thank you! I appreciate it so much!!

Gravatar I'll start trying to recruit others next Monday at my local (Clear Lake) knit/crochet group and work on some myself in all those odd moments I seem to have to crochet (I carry yarn with me almost all the time now). I have no idea where that yarn store is, but I work up near I-10 and 610 E, so I'm sure I can run into town with the squares sometime after work for a drop-off (or some weekend perhaps if I'm coming into town for something else already).

Drew: That's fantastic! I look forward to meeting you!!

Gravatar Drew,

FYI, I'm holding a contest over at my l'il blog http://theweavinginn.blogspot.com . Everyone that sends you a square will get a chance to win a fabulous basket of yarnaholic goodies. One square = one ticket. 10 squares = 10 tickets. Full details at da Inn ...

Drew: Wow, thanks so much! Crochetiers is good people....

Gravatar i've got a slew of acrylic in my stash -- and since you don't have a deadline, i'm more than happy to send a few squares your way.

Drew: Thanks so much Maryse! I look forward to receiving them!

Gravatar Drew...

Great idea, wish I'd thought to contribute earlier - I am buried under several inches of snow and nothing makes me happier than crocheting all day long (except, perhaps, donating said crocheting to charity!)

Expect a package from snowy, blustery Canada in the next few weeks!

Drew: Aint that the truth, eh?

I will keep my eyes peeled! Thanks!!

Gravatar GACK! He's advocating that people use plastic yarn! Oh for shame! At least use something that has some natural fiber in it...GACK!

Drew: LOL - Jon! I'm being pretty insistent that your quote be in my MWK book. "If I wanted to wear a plastic bag I would cut a hole in one and put it over my head". I love that!

Gravatar I was just rooting through my yarn stash for suitable skeins for making 12" squares when I realized how to easily make certain all my squares are the right size -- one of the most common sizes in scrapbook paper and cardstock is 12" x 12". So I'm going to keep a piece of paper in my yarn tote for easy reference.

Hmm, while I don't do scrapbooks (I buy the paper for ATCs and beads and such), I wonder if it would be possible to use the albums used for scrapbooking to have "pages" of afghan square samples? One of these months, I may have to try it.

Gravatar I'd so love to do this, if I could afford the postage. I have LOTS of yarn. It has seriously taken over my craft room. I really need to organize it. But ANYWAY, I don't have the money for postage. Ugh. Will you still be doing this in the upcoming months? Because I am VERY interested in doing this, and I have a book of 100 granny squares that I'd like to break out and use.:D

Drew: Hi Nikki, we all just do whatever we can, and together it makes a big impact. Thanks for your enthusiasm and I look forward to getting your squares in the future!

They now have flat rate priority envelopes and boxes. One way to handle the postage is to get one of those boxes and keeping stuffing it until you just can't stuff it no mo'. Then when you ship it out you only pay a flat rate regardless of weight. Thanks again!

Gravatar Hi Drew, I just started reading your blog, LOVE IT!! In planning to help out with your Comfortghans (I'm assuming you want help from complete strangers :o) I found this site you might like. I do blankets for premies up here, but I can ALWAYS find time to help out elsewhere. Thanks for the great read and crochet tips. I've heard the urban myth about male crocheters ... I'm SO glad to see it is a fact. You do wonderful yarn!

http:// www.crochetpatterncentral...2in_squares.php

Drew: Hi Michelle! I'm so glad that you found my blog and that you are enjoying it. And thanks for the link!

I look forward to receiving some of your squares. Thanks so much!

Gravatar I'm mailing off two squares for you today from Ontario, Canada. One square is one that turned out too small when I was making your Monet Afghan in early December. (Afghan turned out great, by the way!)

Drew: Hi Beth! Fantastic! Thanks so much; I will let you know when they arrive.

And I'm glad your Monet Afghan turned out great. Please send a pic!!

Gravatar Hey Drew I hope I am not too late to join in for such a good cause. I will knit up a square or two or three. Who knows? Hope all is well and let me know if I am too late to contribute. Lawrence

Drew: Hi Lawrence, nope not too late! I look forward to receiving your squares!

Thank you thank you thank you!

Gravatar Drew,
I read your blog all the time and love your work and your personality! So far I have 2 squares finished and there will be more.
Jan

Gravatar Would you still accept them even if I'm not a member of crochetville?

Drew: of course!

Gravatar I have one square ready for you, I'll finish up the skein and mail them on to you

Tina

Gravatar so is this my official 'hit up'?
as soon as the knit olympics are over.... you'll get a square from me

Gravatar Hi Drew, I have been a lurker for months, and made the purse pattern you had a while back, it was lovely btw, anyway, I had started an afghan, I think it was 12 inch squares, i dont know, some of the squares are together already, like in fours. Is it ok to send it all?
I just dont feel like finishing right now, ((ooo)), its a sort of marron color. I probably cant find the color again either! I think it would just be better off if I sent it to live happy somewhere other than in my dark dreary totebox.
and I loved your stash, before and after!!

Drew: Yes, you can send what you have of the afghan. We'd be more than happy to finish it off and give it to someone who needs comfort!

Thanks!

Gravatar Drew, I really want to contribute a few 12" squares, so I looked for 12" square patterns and found one called Butterfly garden. In the notes it said something like "corrections made to row such & such, thanks Drew" naturally I assume that is you...Do you know this square? I have tried going up 2 hook sizes and mine comes nowhere near being 12" I even tried adding an extra row of border, but that made it too bulky.. there are 2 rounds of single crochet listed, and I was wondering if that should have been double crochet. naturally I can't find the site anymore to ask the designer. It really is a beautiful square. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated

Gravatar Drew, I have a 12" square that needs a home. I thought I was helping someone and used the wrong color. Made her one in the right color and now have this one (and I'll probably do a few more) for you. I do have a question and, depending on your answer, you may not want my square!

When you say 3 or 5 stitches in the corner - do you mean total stitches? do you mean the chains betweeen the 2 sets of three on a tradition granny?

My square is 12" (give or take a smidge)... All double crochet, except one extra chain in each corner. Would you like me to single crochet around and make three singles in my one chain corner?

Drew: Hi Kathleen! Thanks for thinking of Heartmade Blessings! We still need so many squares just to catch up, the requests keep rolling in!

On a traditional granny we prefer that there be one row of single crochet as the final row, with the 3 or 5 stitches in the corner.

Thanks again!

Gravatar One more question - before I go watch the Oscars and crochet as I go!

Does the 12" square include the last single row? Mine is pretty much 12" without it, so I'll have to fix it before I send it.

Think I'll try with a slightly smaller hook too, and see how that goes.

Gravatar Hi Drew - I'm a little behind on this.. but I want to send a few squares. I'm assuming you still need some?

Gravatar i just happened across your blog last night and I have already made 2 squares! i'm just so excited! is this something that keeps going or is there a deadline sometime? i inherited all my grandmother's red heart worsted weight yarn when she passed, and i'd love to give it a good home in her honor. thanks so much for organizing something like this. and keep up the great crocheting!!! great stuff!!!

Gravatar Hi, Drew
I love your blog, etc... and all your patterns. I am making your Monet Afghan for a charity auction to benefit Operation Breakthrough, which helps those in poverty here in Kansas City. I would love to send you squares as I can in between projects. Is there a time limit or is this an ongoing project? Hopefully, ongoing so I can just keep sending 'em!
Cindi

Gravatar Greetings from NY... Are you still accepting squares, or should I send them direct to Wanda at HeartMade?
I just found and am having a lot of fun with your blog and patterns.
