1) Congrats on the first paycheck! Those rock.
2) Clients: can't live with 'em; can't live without em.
3) Starting out at the staff level (I did too!) is a good thing. You find out quickly who does the work, and who blows smoke. Hang with the workers, 'cuz' they run the show.

I would've just changed my voice and pretended to be the office manager.

Yeah on the paycheck!
People just like to bitch at people so they feel better. I got it all the time when I did tech support. Hey I didn't break your computer lady!!!
Sadly you just have to accept abuse is part of the job.

yay money! and as for the secretaries' comments -- they're TOTALLY right. what they teach you in law school is only about 35% of what you need to know to practice law, and your secretary knows the other 65% (if you get a good one) -- the grand secret of law firms is that, while lawyers think they're all important with their six-figure J.D.s, NOTHING could ever get done without the secretaries and support staff -- without them, it'd just be a bunch of armani-suited loudmouths yelling at the air, with no documents to review because they never got typed and no active cases because they never got filed! Trust me -- even after a year of practice, I had three back-to-back panic attacks when my secretary was on vacation for a week and I had to figure out how to get checks and where/how to file my motions and it was just awful -- there's nothing worse than killing yourself to perfect a brief so it can be sent out to be filed on time, only to have it bounced back to you, unfiled, because you didn't know you had to send certain filing papers with it... horrible. And, see, that'll never happen to you -- you'll be the smartest associate wherever you start because the rest of them will be running around going "What do you mean, there's a filing fee?"
