Gravatar Oooooo...this is SO important! We just had a lecture on women's health and heart disease is the number one killer of women...NOT breast cancer (even lung cancer is before that)! SO, all that you've talked about here is true and very important! Also remember to eat those fruits, veggies, and whole grains and EXERCISE. Even an hour a week reduces the CHD risks for a woman. Our society is so dependent on cars and easy entertainment that we don't move much anymore...I guess planned exercise is how it needs to go now! All right...enough of that! Have a great day.

Gravatar Wow Claire, you really hit the nose on the head! I try to avoid driving my car as much as possible and walk instead. Thanks for the great tips!

Gravatar Many of the newspaper articles I read say magarine is a major contributor to trans fat in my diet, but you don't seem to think that is the case. Why?

Gravatar Leslie, in recent year's margarine manufacturers have led the food industry in eliminating trans fat in their products. The government's analysis of the American diet in terms of what kind of ingredients and components are actually consumed lags year's behind what is current. Many of the numbers the media cites related to trans fat in our diet go back to 1995 estimates. A quick visit to any grocery store will reveal that most all tub margarines now have 0 grams trans fat and most stick margarines have only very small amounts of trans fats. Across the board, the labels of margarine products clearly tell the story: today's margarines are at most a very minor contributor to the consumption of trans fat in the American diet. I hope this information helps!

Gravatar Hi Emma,

Great blog and information!
Heart disease runs in my family too, esp. cholesterol problems, and like you, I decided to be proactive and do something to reduce my risk for a heart attack. A nurse friend of mine introduced me to a natural product that not only lowers my complete lipid profile but also it raises my HDL which gives me a better risk reduction for heart disease. As well it reduces my risk for Type II diabetes. I checked it out and looked at the published clinicals and I was impressed. Within 12 weeks my LDL/HDL ratio went from 7.1 to 5.0 and my HDL went up 31%!
If you'd like I can send you some info but I won't post it here because I don't want to appear as if I'm selling the stuff. It tastes just like tang orange drink and I now have my whole family taking it!
