LOLOLOL!! First, I'm screaming that Badonkadonk is in wikipedia! And I agree--those mags need to STOP. Because as soon as they see Miss Hippy in the skinny pants, they're going to "whale" on her something awful! Leave the skinny pants to the 20 year-olds, I say.

I agree with you 100%... but once the mag ends up in the hands of N.Y. women... I am bound to become visually impaired after seeing half of N.Y. women sporting pencil pants.

i just don't get the whole skinny pants phenom. have clothing designers even LOOKED at american women? we're pretty much ALL made of curves. i couldn't agree with you more. i wish the whole skinny pants thing just died already.
i love all of your choices for your new garments and thanks for the pattern review link. is that where you get a lot of your inspiration? or do you see a style you want and then hunt down the pattern?
i sent my mom to your site recently because she loves to sew i'm hoping she gained some inspiration! i need to brush up on my skills as well.

i agree with you totally. i don't even like how the skinny girls look in those pants! i am not a very big girl but i also have a lot of junk in the trunk, so no thank you from me on this trend.
ps. i love to see all your creations. i don't know how you do it. you must be a really fast worker!!

Amen! I've been blessed with junk in the trunk too, so I know from where you speak! LOL The last time those skinny jeans were in sale, I was quite slim myself, but "junk in the trunk" aside, those jeans were not flattering on me then either. No thanks to that trend. I can think of better ways to dress my assests! LOL

Unfortunately the 80's are trying to make a comeback and the skinny jean is something that should never again see the light of day. I couldn't/wouldn't wear it then and I won't now. Firstly, I have large feet so skinny jeans look real crazy on me. Secondly I wouldn't want to take a chance of looking like the sista in the second pic. She is a hot mess.

You are so darn right! I was super skinny as a kid, as a teen and as a twenty year old. Then the kiddies came and although I'm not overweight now, I have quite a caboose myself and sorry, skinny pants are not for me!
SKINNY PANTS SHOULD BE BANNED!!! (let's start a cause!)

oh lawd, you've said a mouthful girl! skinny jeans; i'm sure i couldn't even button those jawns over the extra flab my darling children so graciously left me with, let alone the BADONKADONK.
question: did you not long ago begin sewing, too (like your knitting)? if so, i'm even more ashamed. i've been sewing for years, yet haven't ventured into patterns the way you do. you truly inspire me!

i was so happy about the death of the ultra-low-rise-jean-with-resulting-muffin-top and it's being replaced with this?! i'm not sure which is worse. although the skinny jean is v. bad for those with "junk in the trunk" at least it completely covers the trunk. hmmm.... then again, saun is right. gal #2 is a hot mess.

Hi Erica, I thought about you lastnight when I received my weekly Joann Fabrics flyer. This weekend (Labor Day weekend), they're selling Vogue patterns for $3.99/ea (limit 10). McCalls and Simplicity are also on sale (but I forgot the price--I left the flyer at home). Hope there's a Joann store near you! By the way, I think you are doing a FANTASTIC job on your sewing. It is definitely an addiction. I've been sewing for over 20 yrs now, but I haven't really sewn anything for myself for the past 2 years cuz I can't put the knitting needles down! hee hee! Keep up the good work!

Amen! They don't look good on %90 of American women, and the ones they do look good on will still tell you how awfully uncomfortable they are. Great for a fashion shoot, maybe, but who lives that way?
I, myself, am very excited about skinny legs' we-don't-talk-about-her cousin, the top-fitted super-leg pants out this season that made it into the mags but stayed away from the bigger spreads this fall.

Those pictures of the women in skinny jeans only convinced me that I will never wear them. What were they thinking?

Amen sister! I didn't wear the skinny pants in the 80's and there's no way you could get me into them now. I don't care how fashionable they are. I'm fairly thin, but with the big butt and thighs, and might get away with wearing them, but on the other hand I don't want to be responsible for burning holes in people's retinas. So, skinny pants are a nay for me, too.

I think that the women on the right and left of the photo look ok in the pants because they don't have huge hips. The one in the center need not be smiling.
I wouldn't wear the new skinny pants 'cause my backside is too big. I have large hips AND thighs and I don't think that they'd flatter me. I had this conversation with a collegue of mine the other day, and I told her that I'd look stupid in them.

I unfortunately tried to try on a pair of skinny jeans in Chicago 2 weekends ago. I'm in pretty good shape - I'm an Ironman triathlete, even though I'm taking a forced rest due to a broken hand - and I HATED them. To get them to zip, I had to go up 2 sizes from my normal size, and they still look painted on. The only person I know who'd look good in skinny jeans is under 30, no kids, and wears a size 0.

skinny pants + black woman backside = fashion disaster! the boot cut jean is the best denim invention as far as i am concerned. hopefully we will not be fooled into the skinny jean phenomenon.
btw, i love your pattern choices! very stylish. i especially love the 3/4 sleeve jackets. i am starting my first sewing class in about a week! maybe one day i can make my own clothes, like you!

It's true the skinny leg pants were wrong in the first place and to see them come back makes me sad for those who try to stuff their bodies into clothes that aren't made for them. I, too, have the junk in the trunk, and I have no problem with that, that's how my body is made. As far as I'm concerned, I know what works with it and against it. This style is not for my thick thighs and hips. It just won't work. The other two on each end look fine, but the one in the middle does not look good. And when I think about how she must be stuffed into those pants for that photo, she must've been hella uncomfortable.

Hey! I just discovered your blog and you are SO FUNNY. I'm laughing out loud over here.
And just my opinion, but do skinny jeans really look good on anybody? No offense to anyone, but I find the look extremely difficult to carry off, even for skinny people.
P.S. I was just scrolling down the rest of your page and looking at the stuff you make. WOW. You got it going ON. You make fabulous stuff and you got an eye for picking things that really look great on you.

Funny! I'm gonna absolutely have to link to this one!
I was against the skinny jeans trend too... at first. Funny how the media will beat something into your brain until you think you have to have it. Which is what happened to me. Bought a pair last weekend. On Clearance!

Erica ,
I love your blog! I share your opinion on the new skinny jeans completly. Yes, they are cute and might have looked good on me when I was 18 but not now! I have accumulated way too much junk in my trunk for that!
Did you decide which version of the dress you will be making yet? E or C, that is the question?

I must lead a sheltered life. Badonkadonk-I have heard the word but did not know what it meant! Thank you for sharing this information. I agree that the skinny jeans are for skinny people. Photos prove it.
Love your fabrics and your patterns to go with RTW garments. Will keeping checking your blog for progress on these.

I agree with you 100% on this one Erica B. I received this issue of Vibe a few weeks ago and had the same reaction about the skinny jeans. What were they thinking?!? The poor woman in the middle is an extreme example of why the comeback of tapered jeans is just a bad idea.
Haven't Stacy and Clinton on "What Not To Wear" been telling women folk for years that the tapered jean look is not flattering on most figures? Unless you're pencil or anorexic thin, tapered jeans will draw attention (and not in a good way) to your thighs and backside, and shortens your leg line.
Don't get me wrong, there were many things I loved about the 80s (music, toys, corny tv sit-coms), but clothing (and big hair) wasn't one of them. Some trends are meant to stay where they belong: in the past!

Lord, have you guys seen those new Gap ads for the "skinny black pants?" Do women, even young women, really want to look like stick figures (as they do in these ads)? They're all over the BART stations in the Bay Area; I'm tempted to sneak in there after hours and paint some curves on these women. It's downright disturbing.

I must admit I like them, and I'm well over 200 lbs with a big butt... but they look good on me. Maybe it's because I'm also over 6' and all leg, but they are pretty flattering if I wear the right top with them. Go here if you want to take a peek at a pair I made recently.
This is my first time visiting your blog, I'll be back.
