that vogue one is gorgeous, though i have to say, that mccalls 'evening elegance' one with the chiffon thing is really pretty too.

I love the tea-length dresses. At 5'3" it won't swallow her whole, but give her the girlish, but sophisticated vibe you're looking for.
Can't wait to see the finished product. :o)

Why is it that everything is strapless? I see that in the bridal area as well - when my eldest was looking earlier this year, there was just nothing that was not strapless. We won't even go into the sleeves issue. I'm in favor of the chiffon/net around the shoulders thing - I think it looks really retro '50s, myself - but it is sooo hard to deal with Homecoming with a 15 year old...bless you for trying, though!!

I love your choices, too, and ditto your sentiments about the 'work' many prom-goers look like they might be dressing for.... When does DD weigh in?

Dawn & Julia:
She left the dress picking to me. Last year, she picked her own -- we shopped at Jessica McClintock, and so did EVERY other girl at her school! LOL She saw two other girls with her dress on! So she decided to let mom step in this year. She said she wanted a strapless, black dress and told me to get to looking! LOL She picked her shoes, a great pair of Guess strappy, high-heel sandals.

Erica ~ this is a wonderful experience as the mother of a teenage girl. Hold onto that thought during the making, the fitting and the accessory buying stages. My baby is a senior this year and I have a homecoming and prom dress to do but she has already picked her patterns. Now it is just fabric...

Love Badgley Mischka. Such wonderful designers. I think that is my favorite choice too, I'm not too fond of the sweetheart neckline...it's pretty and young, but the v2732 will keep her young and give her a little elegance. I know it will be beautiful. Tell your daughter she's wise to let you make it for her.

Yeah, I'm with you! My friend has a shop and showed me a homecoming/prom catalog last year. All I can say is that many of the dresses - what there was of them - looked more suitable for an exotic dancer than for a teenage girl/young woman. The patterns you've picked are just perfect. I can't wait to see the final product!

Looks like some dresses came back from when I was in high school.
I think the first pattern with the gold bow is cute. I think it is cool that you are making her a homecoming dress cause it will be SO unique.

I had the same problem with my daughter's dresses 20 years ago. We were shopping for a dress at the mall and she called me over to show me a picture of a dress. Not one to put my foot in my mouth I said "Wow, That's a bit too Tootsie for you" Wouldn't you know it. Our 16 yr old sales girl had bought that dress for her prom. My daughter was so mortified by me. Oh, Well.

All of your choices are appropriate for a 15 yr old. I agree - some prom dresses are just way to mature for the wearer. My I suggest some sort of straps - halter maybe like the M5001. I've always thought strapless was for senior proms. I had lots of fun making my DDs junior prom dress. It was sobering, in a way, because you are forced to realize your little baby is growing up.

You are so right about some of the young girls looking way too grown in their dresses. I really like the top view with the halter neck. I think that is so cute, but any of the dresses would be beautiful, but not too adult for her.

Erica, I love your picks for your daughter. You are so right about the choices that young ladies make for prom dresses these days. In the Spring, people me to make prom dresses for their daughters. I give them my "princess ball" speech, elegant not "hoochie mama". 99% of the time the speak works; 1% oh well.

what fun! I used McCalls 5001 for Laurens prom dress this past spring (review is up on Pattern Review) and added straps and it was very pretty. I totally agree with you, too many parents must be smoking something seeing what they allow their girls to go out of the house in - too many look more like streetwalkers than young girls.

Hey Erica,
I love the idea of you making your daughter's dress. In 1988, the year I graduated from high school, it was the thing to have your prom dress made; however, most girls turned to bridal magazines for ideas. Of course, everyone showed up looking like bridesmaids. I found my Oscar de la Renta dress at Saks, but the price tag of $4320 stopped my mother dead in her tracks. Fortunately, my friend's mother was able to make the exact same dress for $250. Needless to say, I stood out from all the other girls that night. Can't wait to see what you do with your daughter's dress.
