Erica, Barbara & Meg,
"How do you do it?".... first off, I don't! I get inspired by the likes of Erica on a daily basis, but I don't get anywhere near the quantity or quality done. That said, I think Erica is spot on - just do it. I work in IT and when I get home, I'm tired and brainless. Since I live alone, I don't have so many demands at home, therefore, I've resolved (for 200 to try to just do it right as I walk in. Before I change or eat or read the mail - I'm trying to just go in, press a seam, rethread a machine, research a technique - anything. Once I get going, I can take a break to change, etc. and I'm hoping I'll get more done that way.

although I don't have the same time issues as a mother, I absolutely agree with you on your perspective. It bothers me when people say "I wish I had time to do that". I think to myself, "YOU DO!!", you just choose to use it a different way. Hence the establishment of priorities. Besides...
"If you do not make time, no one is going to give it to you"

I'm with peacock chic. People make time for the things they want to do. You are lucky to have someone who respects that too.

That's it, it's all about priority. Excellent concise answer Erica.

I think this has a lot to do with you MAKING/TAKING THE TIME.
"My husband doesn't think of my sewing as something frivolous. He knows this is serious to me and something that I love doing. "

Well, we share this priority! I get sick when I can't sew (because life sometimes gets in the way, lol)

Well, after all this discussion I am making a belated New Year's resolution. I vow to do something sewing orientated every day, even if it is just 10min to sew a seam or such. I am sure even I can fit that into my day!!

I think it helps if your significant other respects what you do. Last night my hubby sat in the sewing room with me looking through my pattern book commenting on patterns while I cut out a project. He thinks what I do is amazing and loves when I wear something I made. He doesn't even like when the phone rings when I am sewing because he doesn't like for anyone to disturb me. LOL

A-men. Nobody has heaps of time just lying around - you definitely have to prioritise! I get asked this all the time, too, since I work fulltime, live on a complete building site (DIY could easily eat up my entire day if I let it), and cook everything from scratch, too. If you've got a dedicated spot for sewing you can fit in lots of little ten minute segments and before you know it, they add up to a lot!
And come to think of it, the tivo has saved me, too. My tv consumption is almost zero these days, but when I do want to watch something, it's pre-recorded and something I actually want to see rather than just "what's on" for the sake of it!

Erica,
I am so so glad to have found your blog today! What a joy.
For my part, I treat sewing as little snippet projects. I'll cut out only the parts of the pattern I plan to sew and then sew them rather than do all the cutting and then all the sewing or I will decide to do only the darts one night, the waistband the next.
Sewing is my hobby so I really try not to rush it beyond enjoyment (unless there is a particular event and then I am know to stay up all hours).
By doing small tid bits I am able to spend ten minutes here or an hour there without feeling a burden on my time.
Happy sewing

Though ... you've gotta be realistic ... a single mom with a full-time teaching job and no family around to do babysitting (just for a random example!) cannot always "just make time." For those of us who have no choice about the 14-hour-workdays, it's hard. You have to *plan*, so that you CAN do little snippets here and there. I find that keeping a sewing notebook with the progress of each project lets me keep track and lets me fit sewing in the odd moments. And STAYING INSPIRED - that is probably the main thing.

@ crescentaluna,
I was answering a question that one of my readers posed. That's how "I" make it work. So, that's realistic in "MY" world. You have to do what works for you. Also, you can't compare children that require babysitting to my 18, 16 and 10 year olds... they are self-sufficient. I commend single mothers for all that they do... I couldn't do it... I would fall completely apart without my husband and my "village".
