When thread tracing, is there a certain type of thread you use or can you use any thread?

I used cotton and the longest needle I could find. I saw a recommendation for silk thread, but I didn't want to have to track that down so I went with cotton.

I use thread tracing for placement lines and other construction marks. I don't think I'm ready to trace seam lines!! Did you cut bigger seam allowances?

Ok, that's good to know. I didn't know if it required some special thread or not. Thanks!

@ Elaray,
The pattern didn't call for larger seam allowances. I think that is something that is specific to the construction of the Chanel Jacket. I did however transfer the seam adjustments (where I nipped and tucked) from my muslin to the fabric.

Erica, you're my main lady for fashion forward judgments. I absolutely agree with you on the Michael Kors see-my-crack jersey dress.
So, what is your call on the latest February Burda mag? As you were working on a fabulous blue satin trench, what do you think of the Jan or February takes by Burda on the trench look?

@ Inkstain,
I've seen the previews (still want to see the technical drawings), and I like a few. I'm still putting together what I would like to sew for Spring... kind of a SWAP collection.

Well done Erica! In Portugal there is a special purpose thread for thread tracing and temporary basting. It's 100% cotton but a little thicker than regular cotton thread, yet with a loose twist, so it breaks easier. I also use silk thread but only when I have to press over the basted lines (like when pressing the lapels on a jacket). I can't wait to see the finished product!

These pants are also on my "to do" list! I was also intrigued by the fact that you topstitch the fly early on in the process!

Oh and for thread basting I use Silamide. I got it in NYC during last years PR weekend upon someones great recommedation. It is a 2ply, twisted waxed nylon thread- and I see from Google that alot of beaders use it as well. I see that you can get it from Greenberg and Hammer- probably lots of other places too though.

I know this is a couple days late, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out on this project! I'm trying to learn how to make my sewing more professional-looking, so these techniques will be interesting to watch!

playing catch up here.
I have a friend here who is a prof dressmaker, and she is native to Portugal. She keeps an apt there and goes back for one month a year, and usually comes back with some stuff she gets there that we don't have. She uses a cotton basting thread for fitting basting, and for some thread tracing that is the same that Tany uses (I've seen pics on Tany's blog). Recently I found it online at Atlanta Thread Company - only place I've found it avail in the USA.
Meanwhile, I learned from Kenneth King last year, that you can use rayon embroidery thread in lieu of silk thread for places where you want to be able to press over basting thread that will be eventually removed, and you don't want thread marks to show.

Thanks Marji for the tips. I've never ordered from ATL Thread Co., but I do have them bookmarked. I'll keep that tip in mind regarding the rayon embroidery thread!
