Gravatar I thought about and IMHO it's not even worth the cheap cost of $12. Do you have a BAM discount card? You can get the mags there for the same price....The pattern sales are better than the discounted price that they offer...even when they have sales on the website, it's STILL better at Hancock.

Gravatar No.

Gravatar For you, probably not. You have access to retail stores that have great sales. I have to drive from NJ to NY on a toll road 20 miles. Between the gas and the tolls, the $12 for a year sounds cheap.

Gravatar I can see both sides of the coin...

The prices at the Joann & Hancock are still a little bit cheaper than the B/M/V online sales. Plus, you can still shop the online sales if you're not a member, you just won't get an extra 10% off.

I joined the club and plan to purchase my patterns through them because I want more of my money to support the pattern companies directly.

Gravatar Sound like a NO to me. You are not using over half of the benefits and you could use that $12 to buy 3 Butterick and 5 McCall's patterns with change left over

Gravatar This is the first time I am hearing about this club. In any case i don't see the benefit of joining the club, when you can buy patterns and fabrics on sale at the fabric store in your area. Here in NJ, there are plenty of stores where you can buy fabrics and patterns, however the only store that put patterns on sale is Jo-Ann and the cheapest patterns sell for 1.99, never 0.99cents

Gravatar Definitely not worth it. You get such a better deal at the store! Think about it this way, that's 12 non-Vogue patterns. I don't think you'll buy enough to even justify it.

Gravatar I saw this too, but being in Australia rules it obsolete... I think someone with your sewing skills and pattern buying when the sales are on would not need this.

Gravatar I think you should make more BWOF patterns! LOL But seriously, since you have access to a store that has regular pattern sales, I don't see the for a membership. Would you have to pay shipping on the patterns? If so, that wipes out your 10% discount.

Gravatar I decided not...I keep a list too and did not think it was worth even the $12, with the Hancocks sales...two stores...right here. Plus sometimes when I am able to pull the pattern and read the details on the back of the envelope, or (horrors....sometimes I pull the instruction sheet to take a look...always folding neatly and putting it back however) I may or may not be sold on the pattern afterall. ML

Gravatar Well, I did join the Club. But, I do live overseas (in Switzerland), so this is definitly the cheapest way of buying those pattens. (Just to give you an idea, patterns here are never on Sale. In the Store I pay the full listed price, which can easily be 30$ for a Vogue pattern.) For you, with all the Stores close by, it's probably not worth it.

Gravatar I face myself with the same dilemma... I still haven't decided, since I sew mostly Burda patterns and my purchases from the big 4 are rare.

Gravatar I'm like you, I keep a list of patterns I want and watch for the sales, then buy them... which is instantly why I said no to this deal... sales are so much cheaper and happen fairly often.

Gravatar If you have not read that Vogue Pattern magazine in a while you are missing one of the best sewing magazines out there. It includes a column on fitting by Sandra Betzina, and a column on couture sewing by Claire Shaeffer.

There are always extra articles, this month it is on sewing lace and on surface embellishment. A past issue featured articles on sewing vogue purse patterns in leather. The magazine is not very thick, but the information is outstanding.

I can not justify the price of the club either. If you sign up with Vogue's email alerts you will get notice of Vogue's one day, $5.99 sales. Which for me is better then the 100 mile drive to a local store.

The thing I really miss is the Vogue tags. I liked putting those Vogue American Designer tags in the clothes I made. I used to always get those when I ordered from Vogue.

Gravatar I opted to purchase the membership. I live in MD and eventhough there are fabric stores around, I find that when I do want the pattern on sale it is gone and I end up purchasing from the web site. As my tayloring skills increase there are some oop styles that are worth the discount purchase.

Gravatar It seems to me from all the discussions, that it's more a question of availability. The closest JoAnn's in my community is within walking distance. Their pattern sales can't compete with the BMV offer.

Until I read km's comment I couldn't figure out why the Vogue Magazine is even necessary. I haven't looked at one for years but if they now include sewing technique articles, I'll have to check it out.

Gravatar I have to echo the other comments above and say that it doesn't seem worthwhile to pay for the club membership. I personally don't think it's worthwhile for the savings on patterns since Joann's and Hancock's simply can't be beat and you have ready access to these. Others might say why not, since it's just $12. The *real* question: is it worth $12 to be on a new mailing list for fashion reports and trends? Speaking of which, isn't your second home on the web Style.com?? 'Nuf said

Gravatar @ KM,
I never said I didn't read Vogue Magazine, I said I choose not subscribe. I grab every issue.

Gravatar Erica, I could not imagine you were missing Vogue Pattern magazine. You are too well informed to miss all that good information.

Still, I think it is a well kept secret.

Gravatar I, too signed up for the club because I predominately purchase patterns from the internet...my local Joann's is a mess and I don't visit it. Also even though I can find any fabric under the sun in NYC, patterns have become quite a bit difficult to find.

I think the main benefit of the club is whether or not patterns are accessible to you. If they are, the club may not be as beneficial to you as to someone who has limited access to patterns.

However, at this last internet sale, I got six patterns for the grand price of $22 (BMV) - since it was the company directly, all sizes were available, I didn't need to wait on them, and they were delivered to my door with priority mail shipping.

I don't think the price for the club is exorbitant - $12 - the price of 5 coffees from Starbucks! And if you tried it you would be helping to keep one of our pattern resources around - and personally I think we need to do all that we are able to keep those resources financially sound. Just my 4 cents!

Gravatar I signed up for BMV as well. A lot of the time, I am disappointed when the store has a pattern sale but does not have my size. Or they don't have the new designs that may be shown online and a sale happens to coincide and those patterns are not in the store. I will continue to support my local fabric stores, of course, because I will want to add to my fabric collection (LOL), and buy notions, and just the fun of hanging out at the store sometimes to have the touch and feel experience. Although all of that can be done online too!

Gravatar LOL!! I meant buying notions etc, but I know we can't touch and feel with online fabric shopping!!

Gravatar I'm not sure this is a good buy for you since you have access to Handcock and JoAnn's. I hear about their $1 pattern sale.

I, on the other hand, live in Manhattan with and do not have access to those stores and purchase all my patterns online. Its a bargain for me. So I joined and bought 12 patterns!!

Gravatar Okay - disclaimer - I was once an employee of Vogue Patterns... but well... not really worth it unless you plan to do a lot of shopping!
