I don't see how Iran behaving badly leads one to conclude that we shouldn't discuss things with them. I actually assume the opposite, that the worse an actor is, the more engagement is necessary. The more they take what you say out of context, the more you need to bury them in proper context, hammering your message so it cannot be twisted.
The Guardian Council reported that the recent election was the fairest ever in Iran. What does that say about the other elections?

Again, the main rub here is timing.
My point: If President Obama had waited to engage Iran until after the election, Ayatollah Khameinei may have taken a more moderate stance with the protesters.
Regarding the Guardian Council, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Gua...uardian_council
I would note that criticisms from their wiki include that they arbitrarily disqualify candidates and veto bills by the popularly-elected legislature. I'll pre-emptively note that the council is unelected, before you comment that U.S. Presidents veto bills also.
This is merely to point out that the Guardian Council may not be the best group to cite with regards to fair or fraudulent election results.

Meant that just to be funny, not authoritative. Double fail, I guess.
