Having reread Wolff's piece, I quite see where you're coming from. However:

I'm sure this wasn't Wolff's intention.

Also, I'm not sure if most readers of the piece will it take out either - the awfulness of Murdoch. Chances are Wolff's puff will make them think Murdoch a great success.

For all that, I think your reading is likely to prevail.
