One can usefully make assertions about one's product whose negatives sound absurd via appeal to references. I agree that a vendor claiming that its product is "easy to use" is feeble, but if an industry publication did a bake-off and rated your product easiest to use by far, one could (and would) use that.

I agree, but then the "bake-off" would be an example of putting genuine weight behind your assertion. As soon as you have tangible content you can assert anything.
By way of example, if we got a list of 100 products claiming "easy to use" as a bullet point on the brochure, what percentage back that up on the brochure with an example like an independent survey?
Most don't, which is my rant. The ones that do, awesome!
