Wouldn't the pressure to report results and the media pressure to call the race just fall on the last day of the voting period then? You wouldn't be escaping it if all 50 states had early voting.

No because you don't have to report on the last day.

You could have 2-3 weeks of early voting, then another 2 weeks to allow internal recounts, auditing, etc., and then announce.

Also it would be far harder for the media to do exit polling if it were spread over so much time and so many polling places. Not impossible of course, but harder == better.

Why not give folks a full week to vote. Don't tally votes until that week is up.
