Gravatar Hey Terry-

Have you seen Jakob Nielsen's comparison between print and web writing? URL: http://tinyurl.com/5qpjre

A nice comparison not only of style but what people want from the web as opposed to print. I intend on passing on to my writing teachers.

Gravatar Thanks very much, Reggie. I'm familiar with Nielson's work, but it didn't even occur to me to look him up on this topic. That article which you so kindly drew my attention to is also helpful on a personal level.

Now, do you mean your writing teachers, or your blogging teachers? I am extremely interested in hearing writers' points of view, so thanks!
Terry

Gravatar Other people have pointed out interesting website articles too. Thanks to Susan Kambalu for her very interesting and well-thought-out post, and response to my comment, here:

And thanks to Elise Mueller for drawing my attention to this critique of blogs:

"Now, do you mean your writing teachers, or your blogging teachers?"

I hope that soon that will be one of the same

However my teachers are just now realizing that differences between writing for certain mediums. Our Reading/Language Arts teachers- who teacher writing, are just coming to understand the differences between the two.

Nielson's work is applicable to teacher work, but obviously student work as well.

Gravatar Hi, Reggie, sorry for the delay in responding. I think it's a really interesting issue, and quite relevant in the light of the fact that pupils have to be able to write for different audiences. You're right about teachers - hadn't thought of that. Thx

Gravatar Hi Terry, I am too late for you survey but considering you and I have spoken about this before, I will give you my 2 cents.

I think the major difference can be found in two places. Confidence as you noted is huge. Audience is the second.

I personally hate to write which is one of the reasons I do. Let me explain. I never thought I was a good writer and every English teacher and teacher for that matter told me the only way to improve was to write. In fact, you told me that! Needless to say I am very critical of my own work and that self criticism cost me in confidence. Even when I know what I am talking about, I feel like someone else can explain it better with the written word. Give me a microphone any day.

A professional writer or journalist is writing for an audience for a web site or publication. There is a certainty that their work will be read by hundreds or even thousands of people. I realize there are some blogger out there who enjoy this level of readership but I would venture to guess they are also writing for some professional publication, which helps the readership on their blog.

If I had the confidence to write for a major publication, I would submit my work to them and hope their audience likes my work. But.. I don’t so I am a blogger.

My 2 cents. Good chatting with you and Elaine last week.

Thx, good chatting with you as well: it was also fun experimenting with ustream and co-hosting!

I guess that one thing that comes out of what you're saying is that a writer is somehow more polished than a blogger, or at least that's the expectation. I know what you mean, but I'm not completely convinced: I try to be polished whether I'm blogging or writing. Not sure: it's a difficult one, isn't it?

Gravatar Hey,

I am in a Masters program studying to become a teacher. We have a teaching with technology course, which is definitely opening doors for me. I never realized how much is open to teachers in regards to using technology! Anyways, I saw your post and was intrigued. We have had to start a blog for the course, and it was my first time doing so. I was pondering the same question you brought up in your post about writing and blogging. I have mixed emotions on blogs, and I feel that they are much more open for people to comment and critique your thoughts.

So thanks for posting the article, I found it really interesting and it left me thinking!

Gravatar HI Terry
I have found this so thought-provoking that I have also written a blog post about it to hopefully entice the members of my different learning networks to take part too.
When are you going to shares the results with us?

Gravatar Thanks for the feedback on your blog, Isabelle, and for telling me about it. It would be good if you do the survey too, if you wouldn't mind. I think it will be a month or so at least before I share the results. A lot of people are on holiday now, so I am going to re-plug it in September. Thx for spreading the word, and I found yr comments interesting.

Terry

Gravatar Dear Terry

I did the survey some time ago and it got me thinking, that's why I blogged about it. Looking foward to hearing what your readers had to say about it...

Isabelle

Gravatar Kia ora Terry!

I've just left a comment similar to this one on Jennifer Jones' blog. I blog for the same reason that I write. Why do I write? For the same reason that I blog.
