I think you're right about the war on Islam being the real appeal of Bush to anyone beyond right-wing christians. Your points about why this anti-Islamicism is wrong sound pretty weak next to: the Moslems want to destroy Israel; the Moslems see the US as the great satan, and are at war with the US; therefore we should go after all of them until they quit being our enemy (like England, Spain, American Indians, Germany, Japan, and finally Russia have quit being our enemies.) It snapped in place for me when I heard Ed Koch talk about why he's supporting Bush despite being opposed to him on every domestic issue. It's scary, but there are a lot of people in this country, Israel, and who knows where else, who seriously support a war against the whole Islamic world.

Actually, it was Ed Koch who did it for me too--and some of the libertarians who were "polled" by Reason magazine. I got a recorded message from Koch urging me to vote for Bush because of terrorism, terrorism, terrorism. And now I've received a rather sickening mailing from the Republican Jewish Coalition which must be the same people who did the Ed Koch thing. How did I get on this mailing list? The same way I got on the Traditional Values Coalition email list and the Christian Underground email list? Or did they compile a list of all the Jewish and Jewish-sounding names in the universe?
