I dunno, I just think that the sob story has become the favored approach. Possibly, as you say, there are more people on the streets. But yeah, I've noticed it too.

Yeah, I've noticed it, too.
I've given to a few of them, when I had cash on me (I usually don't). I try not to think they're scamming me, for my own peace of mind. If they aren't, then I've helped them. If they are, then they are. Maybe I get karmic rewards for thinking the best.
Most entertaining beggar: On a median at the intersection by Neiman's at the Houston Galleria. Guy had a sign that said pay me and insult me. How could I resist...? We were stuck with him crossing the street, so I talked to him for a bit. I thought it might be a college prank or street theater, but it was still funny. Five bucks, and I got to call him all kinds of stuff.

Yeah, maybe so. The population of homeless people freezing outside businesses in my neighborhood has stayed fairly constant throughout the winter, but these three people were all out and about...

In some cities, there are shelters that are only open in the winter...maybe that has something to do with it.
