I just had mine done to reward myself for having quit smoking. LOVE them! Now all I need are the pecs to go with them.
Your "mutual friend" was absolutely correct in his assessment and I'm glad you replaced what was once lost. Only yesterday, I had to take out my 00ga PA (which was only upsized from 0ga less than a week ago) because I played to rough and it became too sore to deal with. Once the soreness heals, I gotta work my way back up. So sad.
You didn't say with which gauge you were pierced with. I had to finagle with the nice folks at Body Manipulations here in SF to get my 10ga, and even then they wouldn't do circular barbells because they "want the wound to heal straight."
WTF? After a month, I put the circular barbels in. It's the weight, and they way they move when you run up the stairs that does it for me personally.
