Here is SSRC's listing of the report in book form, which is $24.95 in paperback. The .pdf is also supposed to be available for download this month, but I cannot find it.
This is horrifying, but it will astonish only the willfully ignorant or those who haven't been paying attention. The high school attendance problems in Texas were known to me in 1999 when I was researching the Shrubbery's "Texas miracle," on which he campaigned so actively. What I found was no surprise: state education funding laws encourage school districts to misrepresent their official dropout rates; i.e., they are worse even than the published stats would suggest. And even within Texas, the rates vary with local income.

Yes, we are the Roman Empire in decline, and we are going down like the Titanic. Based on recent American attitudes toward torture, I shudder to even think where we lie on the morality scale.

Hi MariaMaria...long time no see. Yes, it is really depressing to see what has happened to the country under GOP control and in many cases aided and abetted by some sorry Democrats.

Hi Fallenmonk-- I enjoy your blog. It is so hard for me to read that article and not think: "You know what? I do not give a damn about those people in the South. I could care less about the morons in Texas who can't even make it through high school. They have done this to themselves. F&ck 'em. The US should have let them secede back before the Civil War."

Hey Liz, chew on this: by the terms of its original admission to the Union, Texas, which was formerly a sovereign nation, theoretically has the right to divide itself into five states. By my count, five states would have 10 U.S. Senators, not just two.
Does that thought make you sleep better?
