When I was younger than Child #1 I found out first hand about the unfairness of the times. I was in a famous department store with my cousin while we waited for our moms to finish shopping. There were two water fountains - one for "whites" the other said, "colored". I couldn't read very well and thought the c word read, "cooler". So, I proceeded to drink from it. My older cousin promptly told me the difference. I never understood why things were this way. It was just the way things were and we had no control over.
My six year old daughter just had a big unit on MLK lastweek at school. She is in the first grade, she came home heartbroken and said "Mom, I want to be a Rose Park". I thought that was so sweet to be a person to stand up to others. She just couldn't get over it for days. It broke my heart to see her that way. Aren't kids amazing?
