Wonderful story. It does make your childhood sound like something of out a 1950s Disney movie -- which definitely isn't a bad thing.

Hiya Andi,
I said in the story that I had a pretty good childhood. Actually I've thought before it was ideallic(sp)(actually I'm not sure there is such a word).
Those times were when I was younger. That's before I started riding the horses by myself and going down to the lake or to the Mississippi River. People think there's nothing to do out on a farm, but it always seemed like there were more than enough things going on to keep me occupied. I guess simple mind.

I agree with AndiF. It sounds like your childhood was perfect for a boy and I must admit, it would have been perfect for me too, especially when it comes to the horse riding part. I know from first hand experience that barns and hay mows (that's what we called them) were the best place to play.
Wonderful story FM. I'm going to start calling you HFM (Huck Finn Man) LOL.

Hi CF,
Yep the barns and other places around the farm were fun. Maybe not as exciting as in the city, but a lot of fun either way.
I don't know if I was in the Huck Finn mode. I'd say more I was a brainless little kid wanting to have fun.
BTW I visited over at your blog and my toes are still tapping. :O)

Enjoyed that one, FM. My cousins had a similar crawl space in their hay too, but Michigan is a somewhat cooler climate so we didn't cook ourselves in that particular hideout.
Your brother sounds like he really gave a rip under all the havoc-wreaking, too…

Hiya FAR,
So you know about crawl spaces in hay too. Small world isn't it.
You'd have to know my brother. He was probably more afraid that my parents would tear into him if one of us died. :o)

That sounds like it must have been a lot of fun, FM. I would have loved to have tried it as a kid.
Thank goodness that your brother had the good sense to get you some water instead of flogging you.

Hiya Boran,
It's funny, but I can remember at that age I used to want to be a kid in the city. I enjoyed all the stuff on the farm, but at the same time I thought that kids in the city were smarter and had more fun.
As my brother goes, he more than made up for sparing M and I that time.

I loved that story, FM. I am always amazed at how much you remember from your past, and the details you are able to provide. I remember almost nothing...just a vague sense of how things were, but nothing specific. Mostly feelings, I guess; having a lot of time on my hands, looking for something to do, ways to fill the day, my sisters and neighborhood friends always around. I don't think it's a case of "simple minds" as you put upthread...kids used to have to use their imaginations to construct their days, and they weren't scheduled out the wazoo with soccer and playdates and supervised activities. We had a lot more freedom and along with that the time to explore ourselves and our surroundings, and to test our limits and stretch them.

Good morning Laura,
Actually there is so much I don't remember, but every now and then specific things that happened come back to me. I think I have the hardest problem remembering people though. FMom, my brothers and sister will be amazed sometimes that I don't remember this person or that person.
I agree about the more freedom back then as compared to now. I do think growing up on a farm gave me even more freedom than kids in towns or cities. I used to take off in the morning and wonder around the farm and down by the lake and river and sometimes not get home until almost dark. Now if that had been one of my kids doing that, I would have probably been bouncing off the walls with worry until they showed up. However, back in that time and where we lived, I never got into trouble for being gone all day.
