Gravatar No, no. It's a good sign! You've now seen every snake that is in Alabama and every last one of them has been run over. Both you and George -- home free!!!!

Gravatar Andi stole what I was going to say. That means it must be true, though.

Gravatar Oh Andi I wish you were right. I think though that they are massing to the pond and during the day this was just four out of the thousands that got run over. I figure they're plotting down there and deciding on the best time to give me a heart attach.

Gravatar Hi Laura,

That doesn't necessarily mean it's true. I do know I'll be breaking out the high topped rubber boots to walk George though.

Gravatar I think George would be offended by the very idea of a litter box. This sounds to me like a good excuse to (a) make sure someone else cuts your grass and (b) be very picky about how its cut and never let it get long. That way you can see the snakes much easier.

Gravatar Hi Mary,

You might be right about George being offended. I do know he'll almost burst before he does anything inside. When we had to take FMom to the emergency room one time, I was at the hospital for 27 hours before I got back home. George was going crazy to go outside and after we came back in I looked all over the house for any surprise he might have left. There was nothing. I couldn't believe it.

On cutting the grass, I'm just happy anyone else but me is doing it.

Gravatar I was also thinking "they're all run over" so take heart, FM, three blog buddies can't be wrong, can they?

I doubt that George would do the litter box thing. You might have got him into it when he was a pup. Put him on a leash & walk him as needed. If it's wet… well, I've never seen a snake in the rain…

Gravatar Hiya FAR,

OK if three of ya'll say it then I'll say OK, BUT if I see another one, I'll definitely let ya'll know.

Yep I'm going to start to put George on a leash. Like I said, if I see a snake and he's not on a leash, then he's on his own.

Gravatar I think rubber boots and George on a leash are two excellent ideas. Garter snakes and other non poisonous ones are one thing, but water moccasins are another. Pythons? Alligators? More snakes than usual? Sounds like global warming to me... I agree with you, it doesn't bode well...

Take care.

What's the latest on your leg?

Gravatar Hi CF,

I agree on the global warming. In the program I saw about the python and alligator they said with global warming that the pythons/anacondas would spread from New Jersey across to California. Of course I hope they don't start spreading until after I'm gone.

On the leg. I've got an arterial CT scan tomorrow, a arterial doppler study next week, and I see the surgeon next week too. He was talking surgery when I saw him last and he said the test would show exactly where and what had to be done. I've got so many tests and doctors appointments next week that I'm having to stack the appointments on certain days.

I'll let you and everyone know what's going on.

Hope you've been doing good. I did drop by for a second today. Dare I say toe tapping.

Gravatar But seeing 4 dead snakes is better than seeing 4 live ones, right? That's 4 less to worry about.

Gravatar What b2 said. :~)

Hope the scan went well today!

Gravatar Hi Boran,

I agree seeing dead ones is better than seeing live ones. However, I still think the International Conference of Snakes is being held down at my pond and they're hissing back and forth about the right time to scare the hell out of me.

Gravatar Hi Olivia,

See above what I told Boran.

The scan went well today. It only took about 10 minutes and then I was out of there. Next week I have the arterial doppler and a couple of days after I'll see the surgeon. Then we'll discuss the surgery and when it will be.

Hope you've been doing good and that things are blooming for you.

Gravatar Snakes. Hmm. I've lived around a lot of snakes (not at present, fortunately!) I'd suggest renting a Mongoose, but you might not find one at the Rent-All.

Better advice: There are ways to make snake-sighting less likely. No self-respecting snake wants to be seen by a human being much less a dog. So, one key is to make noise, and the other is not go where a snake is likely to be asleep. The noise drives them away, that's part of why George barks most likely, to warn anything dangerous, whether man, woman, or snake, to leave.

Second, stay out of the tall grass and be very careful near rocks. Don't turn over any big rocks or logs unless you are doing it at a distance, like with a rake or hoe.

Your chances of running into a python are extremely remote. Now, a water moccasin would be a bit more likely. Avoid the tree branches hanging over the water. Copperheads like wood piles, dried leaves, old animal burrows. Southern rattlers are called "canebrake rattlers" for a reason, so stick to where the gravel comes right down to the water's edge if you fish from shore.

And most of all, remember that the snakes don't want to see you, either.

If you are really worried, wear heavy footwear and jeans. Take a hoe with you when you walk with George if you are worried. And sing, talk aloud, etc. to let them know you are coming. That won't work every time, but it will make you pretty safe.

Gravatar Hi KS,

Thanks for the advice. I have high top rubber boot, and I'm trying to work out something like a suit of armor to wear along with them. OK the armor will probably be 8 or 10 rolls of duct tape rolled around some jeans.

I've only seen those snakes in the road so far, but from past experience I do know there are snakes around the pond. Most of the time I guess they run away from me and George, but I do remember one time a couple of years back a snake was coming toward the patio and straight toward me. I jumped up yelling, grabbed George and ran in through the french doors. I look out the doors and it just laying by the patio. Needless to say, I took George out the front door for the next week, and then very cautiously back into the backyard. :O)

Hope you and Teach are doing good and take care.
